Letters to the Editor

To whom it may concern,

I am writing this on behalf of my wife, Sonia Nemec.

Sonia works hard to have a nice looking lawn! It gives her a lot of pleasure! To have someone deliberately try to destroy that lawn, with what appears to be a burn down chemical, is hard to understand. I can say without a doubt, it saddened and hurt her. She did not deserve this!

We have no idea why anyone would do this. She did make a call on some animals grazing on her lawn, in case they were being looked for. If the fence was let down, so they got out, I can assure you, she was not responsible for it.

It also bothers me that someone shot a high powered rifle, or a large hand gun, close to our house. We live in a small town, where everyone knows everyone. It's hard to believe something like this could happen.

Dear Editor,

By way of introduction, I am a retired Vietnam veteran who is writing a book about Vietnam War memorials across America.

Some time ago I contacted many of you to request your assistance with information about any Vietnam War memorials in the South Dakota counties and communities you support and live in. I'd like to share with you the results of my prior request as well as solicit information on any relevant memorials that may not be included on this list.

I am interested in specific Vietnam War memorials that include any inscription, dedication, or other tribute to Vietnam veterans. General veterans memorials and other war memorials that do not include Vietnam are not within the scope of my inquiry.

The list of South Dakota memorials is:

Aberdeen - Vietnam War memorial, Anderson Park, 7th Avenue SE at Harrison Street South.

Beresford - Multiple war memorial that includes the Vietnam War, Highway 46, east end of town.

Clark - Multiple war memorial that includes the Vietnam War, Park, 1st Avenue and Commercial Street.

Huron - Multiple war memorial that includes the Vietnam War.

Kyle - Multiple war memorial that includes the Vietnam War.

Pine Ridge Reservation, Oglala Lakota College.

Milbank - Multiple war memorial that includes the Vietnam War, courthouse lawn, East Main Street between 2nd and 3rd Streets.

Pierre - State Vietnam War memorial, State Capitol Complex, East Capitol Avenue.

Plankington - Vietnam War memorial, Ronald L. Nolder memorial inside County Courthouse.

Pukwana - Vietnam War memorial, Samuel J. Jorgensen Memorial Game Refuge.

Rapid City - Multiple war memorial that includes the Vietnam War, Memorial Park near the intersection of Seventh and Omaha Streets.

Sturgis - Vietnam War memorial, NW corner, Veterans Club, 868 Main Street. Dedicated Jan 31, 1988.

Vermillion - Multiple war memorial that includes the Vietnam War, 211 West Main Street.

Watertown - Vietnam War memorial, courthouse, 14 First Street SE.

If you have additional information on these memorials or know of any additional Vietnam War related memorials in South Dakota I would appreciate any information about the memorial and it's location you could provide. If there is anyone else you think may be able to provide information I would appreciate your forwarding this to them.

At present there is no complete reference book for Vietnam War memorials. My intent is to correct that with the publication of this book sometime in the next year or so. Thank you for your past and future assistance with my requests.

Regards,

/s/L. Nick Hansen
