Leona S. Kury

Leona Susan Kury, age 93, of Custer, SD, passed away June 3, 2011, at the Custer Regional Senior Care in Custer.

Leona was born May 11, 1918, in Kimball, SD, to John and Louise (Schoenfelder) Brech. She was raised in Cottonwood, SD, and attended rural school in Jackson County near Cottonwood through eighth grade.

On May 29, 1946, she married Fred Kury in Rapid City, SD. After her marriage Leona lived in Phillip, SD, until 1957, when she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, and in 1962 Leona moved to Custer where she has resided since.

Leona hand crafted crosses out of various materials and gave them to people worldwide, they are cherished by many. Leona was like a mother to many.

Survivors include her sons, Paul (Anita) Kury of Euless, Texas; Gordon (Diane) Kury of Custer; daughters, Mary (Darrel) Deal of Rapid City; Wanda (John) Akers of Custer; a brother, Don Brech of Portland, Ore.; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Fred, a son, James; two brothers and six sisters.

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Monday, June 6, 2011, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Custer with Father Peter Kovarik officiating.

Interment was in the Custer Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in Leona's name to benefit St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Custer.
