Philip's Mariah Evans toes the free throw line with only 10 seconds remaining in overtime play. The 2007 Girls Basketball District 13B Championship is on the line.

The crowd in the Murdo gymnasium is cheering and screaming almost hysterically, but a hush settles as Evans aims and releases the ball. It arcs upward, then downward toward the basket. The shot misses.

White River calls a time out. All too quickly, the teams retake the floor and all eyes are again on the lone Philip girl on which the game now hangs.

Evans receives the ball from the referee and aims for her second shot. The regular game has been a classic comeback story for the Scotties. Philip had been behind by nine points at halftime, 30-21. The Scotties then stymied the White River Tigers for over 6 1/2 minutes of the third quarter while making baskets themselves. Philip had begun the fourth quarter only one point behind, 34-35. Ten seconds remained in the regulation game, 48-51, when Scottie's Tylissa Fitch lofted a three pointer to tie the game and force it into overtime.

Philip dominated the beginning of overtime play by rampaging ahead by five points, but then White River took control and sank their own five. Again the score was tied. With 10 seconds remaining in overtime, the ball was passed to Evans, who took advantage of a small opening to shoot. Hard pressed, White River ended up fouling Evans while trying to force her shot to fail. Two free throw shots - then just one shot - and the entire game was in Evans' hands.

Evans releases the ball. It hits the back of the rim. It then drops in through the basket and Philip leads in overtime.

The Scotties stop the two chances that the Lady Tigers might use to score in the last ten seconds. The buzzer sounds and Philip wins the District 13B Championship game on Thursday, February 22, with a final score of 57-56. The Scotties have earned their place in the 7B Region Basketball Tournament.

White River finished their season with a 12-10 record.
