Lady Scotties take fouth place in Philip High School Volleyball Tournament

Slam coming ... Philip’s Tylissa Fitch goes airborne to deliver a spike to the St. Thomas More team.

The Scotties hosted the 17th annual Philip High School Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, September 9.

After a full day of matches, Philip finished in fourth place. Of the ten teams competing, the Bennett County Lady Warriors took first place, while Hot Springs and St. Thomas More took second and third, respectively.

A pool of five teams played against each other in a round-robin competition in one gymnasium, while a pool of the other five teams used the same format in the other gym. The top two teams of each pool then played against each other for the first-through-fourth positions.

Tournament play called for the best two games out of three. In the preliminaries, the Philip team easily defeated Lead (25-17, 25-12) and Belle Fourche (25-21, 25-15), though lost to St. Thomas More (25-20, 25-22).

In the first round of championship play, Bennett County had to go through Philip in order to then go up against Hot Springs. Philip would play St. Thomas More for third or fourth place.

St. Thomas More won the first game against the Scotties. Philip came back in the extended second game, pulling a win out of the grip of their opponents. St. Thomas More took the third game to win the best two out of three; 20-25, 27-25, 25-14.

The next volleyball match for the Lady Scotties will be at 3:00 p.m. at Murdo against the Jones County Coyotes.
