Lady Scotties end basketball season vs. New Underwood at Regional Tournament

The Regional 7B Girls' Tournament ended the basketball season for the Philip Lady Scotties.

The game against the New Underwood Tigers was held in the Rapid City Civic Center on Thursday, March 1.

Leading at the end of each of the three first quarters, the Lady Scotties seemed on the verge of taking the Regional title, but, beginning with the first possession of the fourth quarter, the game turned on Philip. New Underwood's Devin Smith put through a shot to put the Tigers within one point, at 25-24.

New Underwood somehow got turnovers on the next three possessions to take a 25-29 lead. The Scotties scored just 10 points in the second half, and they lost possession over 11 times in the last quarter.

"In the fourth quarter, New Underwood's press pretty much got to us," said Philip head coach Mike Albrecht. "Once we lost the lead, we panicked and just couldn't get back the momentum."

That was understandable, as neither the Philip nor New Underwood teams have tremendously experienced players. Only three seniors dressed; two from Philip.

"Getting into the Region game was a learning experience for us," Albrecht said. "The pressure in tournament play is a completely different thing than during the regular season. Playing on a large court like the Civic Center was an intimidating experience for a young team like the Scotties. The great Philip area support followed us into post-season play. We plan on being back next year."

The only other year the Lady Scotties have won the District Tournament was in 1997. This will be New Underwood's third Girls' State Class B Tournament appearance, including last year and 1977.

Philip closed its season at 14-7. The Tigers are 15-5 for the year.
