Ladies earn 2nd at West River Tourney

Tight rebound ... Philip’s Emily Schofield (#5), Carissa Doolittle (#41) and Kelsey Hostutler (#31) vie for a rebound against four Newell Irrigators during the championship match of the West River Girls’ Baskteball Tournament on February 14.

The Philip Lady Scotties took second place at the West River Girls' Basketball Tournament that was held in Hot Springs and in Rapid City February 12, 13 and 14.

Seven other teams competed; Newell, Faith, Wall, Hot Springs, Moorcroft, Upton and Edgemont. The Scotties first went up against the Hot Springs Bison. The first half ended with Philip having doubled the Bison's score, 35-15, and the game ended with Philip winning 65-39. In this first game, Kenzy Pinney and Marissa Mann led their Philip team by each racking up 19 points.

Philip next went up against the Wall Eagles, who had earlier defeated Edgemont. Though the Scotties were ahead 33-27 at half-time, their lead diminished to just four points, 59-55, at game's end. Again, Pinney led her team with 20 points with Mann adding 16.

In the championship match, Philip was matched against the Newell Irrigators, who had defeated Upton, WY, in the first round. The Scotties started slowly, ending the first half 17-38. Though the second half was far closer, the final score was 39-63 against the Scotties. This time, Philip's Hook led her team, scoring 15 points and pulling down nine rebounds.
