John "Paul" Noteboom
John "Paul Noteboom, 58, died May 2, 2008, at the Sanford Hospice Cottage, Sioux Falls, with his wife and daughter at his side.
John "Paul" Noteboom, was born December 24, 1949, in Philip, SD, the son of John H. and Elfrieda (Stahl) Noteboom. He was raised on a ranch 25 miles northeast of Philip and attended rural grade school in Haakon County. While attending high school, he worked at the Chevrolet dealership and Philip airport. Paul graduated from Philip High School in 1968 and attended Watertown Lake Area VoTech and graduated with an A&P certificate in aircraft mechanics.
Paul met Bonnie Ahart in Philip and they were married July 22, 1971, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip. To this union two children were born, Cody Shane in 1973 and Trishia Lynn in 1974. The first five years of their marriage were spent on the Noteboom ranch working with his parents. Paul also did custom hay moving while on the ranch.
In 1976, they moved to Philip and Paul did carpentry work, road construction and was employed at Reckling's Hardware. They moved to Spearfish in 1986 and Paul worked as a heavy equipment operator for Wharf Resources. After the death of their son in 1990, Paul and Bonnie owned Sparrow's Bakery in Spearfish and Belle Fourche as well as an optical business in Spearfish. Paul then went to work for the Forest Service/USDA as an Engineering Equipment Operator.
In 1999, he and Bonnie took "a leap of faith", sold their home, and went to work with the Laborers for Christ, Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. They helped build church projects in Iowa, Florida, Oklahoma and Nebraska. After 10 months with the Laborers for Christ, Paul was diagnosed with cancer. He and Bonnie spent the next five years traveling in the RV and visiting many parts of the country. They settled in Sioux Falls to be near their family.
Paul's favorite hobby and love was snowmobiling. He enjoyed many trips "west" and made many friends in his years of riding and working the industry. He worked at Trailshead a few winters renting out sleds. Over the years, Paul was involved with: the South Dakota Snowmobile Assoc. and served on the State Board of Directors from 1992-1994, Laborers for Christ from 1999-2000, Philip Volunteer Fire Department, Green & Gold Club in Spearfish, Black Hills Corvette Club, Spearfish Snowcruisers and various church offices.
Paul was baptized September 2, 1960, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Milesville, SD, and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on May 3, 1965. He was currently a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls.
He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; a daughter and son-in-law, Trishia (Matthew) Fischer of Olivet, SD; three grandchildren, Caden William, Alex John and Joslynn Faye, Olivet; his mother, Elfrieda Noteboom of Philip, SD; three siblings, Judy (Ken) Heeb of Custer, Jerry (Kathy) of Yuma,AZ and Mike (Tina) of Philip; father-in-law, Rev. Neal Ahart and his wife, Marjorie, Hartley, IA; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, mother-in-law, Eileen Ahart in 1984, his son, Cody Shane in 1990, and his father in 2005.
Memorial service were held on May 5th at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. On line registry at www.chapelhillfuneralhome.com
