Funeral services for Jerry Iron Moccasin, 53, of Kadoka, S.D., formerly of Eagle Butte and Timber Lake, were held Saturday, April 26, at the Old Agency Building, Eagle Butte. Jerry will be cremated and his remains buried with his mother at the Timber Lake Cemetery at a later date.
Jerry entered the spirit world April 18, 2014, near Philip.
Jeremiah Christopher “Jerry” Iron Moccasin was born September 15, 1959, in Eagle Butte to Georgelyn Traversie. He was adopted at an early age by his auntie, Eugenia Traversie, and was raised on the old T.O. Traversie Ranch between Timber Lake and Eagle Butte. He was educated in Timber Lake, and after graduating, he attended Mitchell Vo-Tech for Auto Mechanic Training.
Jerry continued to live and work the ranch with his mother, Eugenia, meeting and later marrying Cheryl Hogg on February 4, 1996, on the Ken and Kate Meier ranch. After Eugenia’s passing, Jerry and Cheryl moved to Kadoka where he worked on the W.O. Weller ranch from 1997-2006.
In 2001, Jerry married Crystal Red Hail in Kadoka. For the last several years he had been working for the Buster and Nancy Peterson Ranch south of Philip. Jerry enjoyed bowling, sitting around the campfire telling stories, riding horses, working cattle and playing golf. He was also a big Dodge and Mopar fan.
Jerry enjoyed spending time with those he loved, including his ex-wife, Crystal Red Hail, and her three children of Kadoka. Jerry is also survived by a daughter, Lorelie Reiss of Garden City, Kan., and her three children, Gage Reiss and Kennedy and Hawk Vainerere; brothers, James Traversie, Eagle Butte, and Calvin Sampson, White Earth, Minn.; sisters, Marge Thompson, Eagle Butte and Toni Sampson, White Earth, Minn.; and two aunties, Celinda Traversie and Vivian Sampson of Eagle Butte.
Jerry was preceded in death by his mother, Eugenia Traversie.
