Jeraldine Hickman

Jeraldine Hickman, age 87, of Blackwell, TX, died Wednesday, December 6, 2006, at Meadow Creek Nursing Home in San Angelo, TX.

Funeral services were held Monday, December 11, at Blackwell First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Charles Casey officiating.

Jeraldine Jordan was born on June 17, 1919, at her parents' home west of Blackwell. She was the only child of Robert Henry and Tommie Mea (Richards) Jordan. She graduated from Blackwell High School in 1936 then attended Texas Technological College in Lubbock.

Jerry, as she liked to be called, was united in marriage to w.a. Hickman on October 17, 1941, in Ballinger, TX. They lived in Bronte for a short time and then Jerry lived with her aunt in Fort Worth and worked at Montgomery Ward while w.a. was stationed at Love Field during wwii. Following w.a.'s discharge from the military, they moved to Blackwell, first to the Hanna Ranch west of town, and then to the John and Eula Jordan home three miles northwest of Blackwell. It was here they raised their three children while spending summers on their ranch in South Dakota. In 1964, they moved to South Dakota but returned to Blackwell in 1980 while continuing to ranch in both states.

Following the death of her husband, Jerry continued the ranching operation in Texas and was proud of her cattle and the chance to improve the land following years of drought. She was especially proud of the land west of Blackwell that had been in her family for nearly 100 years.

Jerry was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Blackwell and served as church pianist for many years. While her children were growing up, she played for many school and commmunity events. She always loved music and passed that appreciation on to her children. In June of 2006, she was honored by the Methodist Church in Blackwell for her years of service.

Everyone knew Jerry to be a wonderful cook. Whether visiting or working on the ranch, you could always count on being treated to a good meal.

Grateful for having shared her life are her three children, Tommy Hickman and his wife, Janet, of Bronte, TX; Suzanne Buchholz and her husband, Bruce, of Westminster, CO; and Shirley Halligan and her husband, Frank, of Midland, SD; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, w.a. Hickman; and her parents, r.h. and Tommie Jordan.

The family requests memorials be sent to First United Methodist Church of Blackwell, Kirley Community Hall, Hayes, SD, or Hans p. peterson Memorial Hospital, Philip, SD.
