Irene King, age 96 of Philip, South Dakota, died Sunday evening, October 24, 2010, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Irene C. Kost was born March 6, 1914, at Alpena, South Dakota, the daughter of Jacob and Anna (Heribolt) Kost. She grew up on a farm south of Ree Heights, South Dakota, and received her education in that area. As a young girl she worked on the family farm. Later she moved to Miller where she worked at Vanderbelt Hotel and Restaurant. She then moved to Huron where she worked at the Huron Clinic.
Irene was united in marriage to Walter Burgess in 1940 at Huron. They made their home in Huron where she worked at J.C. Penney's until she managed the Jarold Dress Shop. After her husband's death on June 30, 1969, she continued to reside in Huron.
In 1970, she married Paul King at Rapid City. They lived in Huron where they operated the Jim River Peddlers Antique Shop. They operated the shop until his death on January 2, 1982. She then sold the shop and moved to Tenito, Washington. She continued to live in Washington until she and Marvin "Pete" Wells moved to Kadoka, South Dakota. They resided in Kadoka until Pete's death on April 24, 2005. In October 2005, she moved to the Senechal Apartments in Philip, where she has since resided.
Irene was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Huron.
Survivors include two step-sons Mike King and his wife Jan of Sioux City, Iowa, and Jim King and his wife Ruth of Huron; three step-daughters Mary King of Rohnert Park, California; Claudette Kahl and her husband Fred of Gillette, Wyoming, and Paulette King of Rohnert Park, California; three step-grandchildren; one sister Esther Ritchhart and her husband Abe of Huron; one step-sister Annette Kost of Pierre; several nieces and nephews, including Cindy Wilmarth and her husband Kenny of Kadoka; and a host of other relatives and friends.
In addition to her first husband Walter Burgess on June 30, 1969; her second husband Paul King on January 2, 1982, and Marvin "Pete" Wells on April 24, 2005; Irene was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers; two step-brothers; a brother-in-law; and four sisters.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, October 27, at the Rush Funeral Home in Philip with Pastor Kathy Chesney officiating.
Pallbearers are Jim King, Ken Wilmarth, Paul Marvin and Ben Kahl.
A second funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 1, at the Kuhler Funeral Home in Huron.
Interment will be at Restlawn Memory Gardens in Huron. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Philip Nursing Home or Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
