Hazel C. Lovald-Nervig

Hazel C. Lovald-Nervig, 86, of Sioux Falls, formerly of Philip, died Monday, September 18, 2006, Maryhouse TCU, Pierre.

A memorial service was held September 21, 2006, at Lutheran Memorial Church, Pierre. Family graveside services were held at the Masonic Cemetery, Philip. A memorial service will be held in Sioux Falls at a later date.

Hazel Johnson was born on June 20, 1920, to Helmer and Clara Johnston on a farm near Vienna, SD. The family spent time on a farm near Naples, SD, before moving to Watertown, SD, in 1931. Hazel graduated from Watertown High School in 1939 and put herself through Augustana College by working many part-time jobs and with a PEO Scholarship. She graduated from Augustana College, where she competed with the debate team on a national level, graduating in 1942 with a degree in English. She taught school in Salem, SD, Worthington, MN, and Philip, SD.

Hazel married Scott Dokken Lovald on July 8, 1945, at Philip, where they raised their family and lived for 31 years. Scott passed away in 1972. After taking devoted care of her mother-in-law, May, and after May's death in 1974, she moved to Sioux Falls, where she worked for the YWCA and was an active part of the Widowed Persons Service Program. She was a member of PEO Chapter BQ and Beaver Creek Church Guild, as well as renewing her connection to Augustana by serving on the Fellows Cabinet and as a member of the Augustana Auxiliary. Hazel lived a life of service to her family, her church, and her community.

She married Pastor Edward W. Nervig and they served the congregation of Springdale Lutheran Church in Harrisburg for several years and were members for 20 years.

The family who loved her dearly are her son, John (Roberta) Lovald and Karen (Lee) Leuning, all of Pierre; her grandchildren, Nathan (Heidi) Leuning of Sioux Falls, Kelly Leuning, recently of Okinawa, Japan, Kerry (James) Rosane of Oronoco, MN, Krista (Trent) Miller of Las Vegas, NV, and Scott Lovald of Albuquerque, NM; and great-grandchildren Chet Leuning, Anna Leuning, Elyse Miller and Jamison Rosane; a sister, Crystal (Bob) Albrook, and a sister-in-law, Mildred (Art) Johnson of Rapid City. She also leaves behind step-children, Randi Nervig of Minneapolis, MN, and Mark Nervig, Tacoma, WA; and step-grandchildren, Luke and Spencer Nervig.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; her sister, Marion Popham; and her brother, Art Johnson.
