Harold B. Swanson

Funeral services for Harold B. Swanson, 90, of Chamberlain will be held Friday, December 8, 2006, at 1:00 p.m. CT at the Zion Lutheran Church in Chamberlain with burial in the Riverview Cemetery at Chamberlain. Visitation will be Thursday, December 7, from 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Hickey-Wevik Funeral Chapel in Chamberlain.

Harold B. Swanson was born the oldest of seven sons and two daughters on December 17, 1915, in Cleveland Township in Brule County to Emiel R. and Adeline (Lunn) Swanson.

He attended school at the Swanson School at Cleveland Township. In 1940, Harold purchased his farm and on March 15, 1941, he was drafted into the U.S. Army 43rd Engineers during WWII serving in the Pacific Theater and in Australia. After three years, Harold was furloughed, returning to South Dakota, he went to see the girl he left behind, Marjorie Holstein.

On December 24, 1944, Harold was united in marriage to Marjorie Holstein at Chamberlain. Shortly after, he returned to the base and in August of 1945 was honorably discharged from the army. Harold returned home and worked with the county building roads and helped pick corn for the Holstein brothers. The following spring, Harold and Marjorie moved onto their farm where they remained until 1986 when they retired and moved into Chamberlain. In 2001, Harold moved into the Regency Retirement Assisted Living in Chamberlain. He enjoyed gardening and tending to all the flowers in the courtyard and the plants inside.

Harold passed away on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2006, at his home at Regency Retirement Assisted Living at Chamberlain at the age of 90 years. Harold leaves behind eight children: Gary Swanson of Pukwana and a special friend, Anna Marie Fowler, of Huron, Paul Swanson and his wife, Myrna, of Pukwana, Suzanne Gough and her husband, Robert, of Tyndall, Alice Jones and her husband, Irvin, of Philip, Mary Truman and her husband, Emmet, of Kimball, Jane Butterfield and her husband, Dennis ,of Mitchell, Carol Delfs and her husband, John, of Las Vegas, NV, and Neil Swanson and his wife, Francine, of Pukwana; five brothers: Walter Swanson and his wife, Betty, and Rudy Swanson and his wife, Theone, all of Chamberlain, John Swanson and his wife, Marjorie, of Pukwana, Edwin Swanson of Canton, and Alvin Swanson and and his wife, Gwen, of Pukwana; and a sister, Lois Bickner and her husband, Donald, of Kimball; 29 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife, Marjorie, on July 8, 1989; a brother, Lawrence; a sister, Helen; three grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Susan Swanson.
