Haakon District School board puts music trip on hold, tables Deep Creek School

The scheduled Haakon School District 27-1 school board meeting on Monday, December 14, addressed the proposal of making the traditional music trip into a senior-only excursion.

Superintendent Keven Morehart said, "We are under the understanding that a senior-only music trip is a 99.9 percent go for next school year. The question was about this year. The issue has been decided. There will not be such a trip this year. It's a lot easier to send 10 students than 60. And, what better way to go than with your fellow senior musicians that you've been with for at least four years?"

Bill Slovek, board president, checked, "as long as the administration and director Barb Bowen are on the same page." The senior music trip for next year was approved by the board.

Extra-curricular contracts have been made official for Morehart to be an assistant wrestling coach and for Deb Smith to be the advisor for the school annual.

A total of $1,277.50 has been accrued for a total of 18.5 hours of instructor substitution work in the school system for the month of November. Total hourly wages for November are $21,163.06, for a total of 1,908.08 hours of work.

An executive session concerning personnel lasted approximately two hours. No action was taken afterward.

The issue of possibly re-opening the Deep Creek rural school was tabled until next month's meeting.

The report given by Secondary Principal Jeff Rieckman included that semester tests will be held on December 21-22, before the Christmas break. The first semester officially ends on January 7. The Christmas concert will be December 22. Pamela DeJong will hold a financial aid seminar for seniors and their parents at 6:00 p.m. on January 18. Registration for 2010-2011 classes will be done during the first part of February.

Morehart's superintendent's report gave praise to the staff doing the SPED evaluations. He said that the elementary Christmas concert was wonderful. The kindergarten class is to increase by one student in January. The Title evaluation report should be available before the end of the month. The high school one-act play will hold a public performance at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18.

The next regular meeting for the board of education will be at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, January 18.
