Haakon District 27-1 School Board meeting

The regularly scheduled Haakon District 27-1 School Board meeting on Monday, October 16, was held at the Milesville Rural Attendance Center.

The board had inspected the currently used school buildings, finishing at the Milesville RAC before their board meeting. The inspection went well. The board then discussed the surplus of the Deep Creek teacherage, though no action was taken.

Luke Weber has been officially approved as the assistant wrestling coach for this season.

Superintendent Keven Morehart stated that the K-6 Title Review was currently underway. Morehart and Principal Jeff Rieckman have started teacher evaluations.

The last day for the Curriculum Mapping Workshop is October 20.

The fifth and sixth grade students went on a field trip to Pierre on Wednesday, October 18. The South Dakota Space Days included a trip to the planetarium, an update about the Mars Rover, a presentation by NASA astro-physicist Theodore Gull, and a presentation from NASA Colonel Michael Fossum who was born in Sioux Falls.

A guest speaker will be talking with the third-through-sixth grade students on Monday, October 30. Dr. Dan Vaughan from the Carolina area (no relation of Philip instructor Lee Vaughan), is an educational intern in the Badlands National Park. This retired physician will talk about time travel and fossils.

Principal Rieckman and a Golden West representative performed a walk-through of the school buildings last week. The school is looking for an estimate quote on an all-school intercom system.

According to Rieckman, the Parent Teacher Conferences, held on Tuesday and Wednesday, September 26-27, had a great turnout. An estimated 80 percent of the parents of the junior high and high school students attended one or the other of the two evening sessions.
