Haakon County Commissioners approve plat map for new development north of town

By Nancy Haigh

The location for six new home sites was approved by the Haakon County Board of Commissioners at their regular meeting Tuesday, May 4, 2010.

Tom Foley and Barney Pfeifer approached the commission with a plat for a housing development located approximately three miles north of Philip along Highway 73. The plat is set for six lots of six plus acres each. Currently a low maintenance county road borders the property. The board approved the plat.

Kenny Neville, Haakon County highway superintendent informed the board that due to a bridge failure in the northern part of the county he purchased a large culvert as a replacement. The department is installing it as well as a culvert that was slated to be installed previously.

The board approved Neville's request to surplus 36 used truck tires, to be sold at auction this Saturday. The board also approved his request to reduce the price of used sign posts from $5 and $7 to $3.

The county's share of a new laptop computer for the veterans service officer is $843.92. Jackson County will pay for the other half. Terry Deuter, VSO, for both counties noted the cost included two printers and two sets of cables, one for each office.

Reports were given by Sheriff Larry Hanes, Auditor Pat Freeman, County Health Nurse Heidi Burns, and Adele Harty, Extension educator.

The commission discussed wage schedules for the new health nurse assistant and Kevin Pfeifle. Pfeifle was hired as the director of equalization. He will replace Rita Merrill July 1. He is acting currently as a second deputy of equalization while Merrill trains him for the position. After July 1 Merrill will become a temporary part-time deputy to assist Pfeifle as needed. Tracy Radway is currently the deputy director of equalization.

Freeman noted that the current phase of plumbing renovation is nearly complete. She did not give a start date for the final phase or replacing the outside lines.

The board approved the county rangeland fire protection agreement with the South Dakota Department of Agriculture, meeting minutes from April 6, 13 and the equalization board minutes from April 13, and the past month's warrants.

Also approved was for Pfeifle to attend an equalization conference with Merrill next month and the county welfare official workshop in Pierre next month.

The board will meet June 1, 2010 for their next regular meeting.
