Gerald A. "Jerry" Young

Gerald Allen"Jerry" Young, 62, Midland, SD, died Saturday, April 9, 2005, in Ft. Pierre as a result of a two-year battle of cancer.

Services were held Thursday, April 14, 2005, at the Community Youth and Involved Center in Ft. Pierre with Pastor Paul Bly and Chaplain Dodie Noordermeer officiating. Burial will follow in the Scotty Philips Cemetery. Arrangements are with Kinkade Funeral Chapel of Sturgis.

Gerald was born August 7, 1942, at Deadwood, SD, to Merle and Jennie (Dingeman) Young. He grew up in Rapid City, SD, and graduated from Rapid City Central High School in 1960. After high school he worked construction on the Minute Men and Titan missile sites located in Western South Dakota.

Gerald was united in marriage to Janice Fae Keller in Rapid City on November 26, 1960. Before they moved to Pierre in 1965, he worked on various construction projects. He was employed with the South Dakota Department of Transportation in Pierre, SD, for 16 years.

Loving carpentry work, he started his own construction company, the Gerald A. Young Construction Company. In the mid to late 1970s, Gerald was a big factor in implementing the Self-Help House Program in the Pierre-Ft. Pierre area. He was also instrumental in the construction of the South Dakota Culture Heritage Center.

In 1994, they moved to Haakon County and Gerald was employed by the Haakon County Highway Department until recently retiring. You could always find Gerald doing carpenter projects in his spare time whether it be constructing barns, decks, or remodeling homes. Gerald took pride in being an athletic official for basketball and football, with officiating at the State High School football Championships at the dome in Vermillion, SD. He was recently recognized by the South Dakota High School Athletic Association for his many years of service officiating high school football. He loved watching his children and grandchildren competing in sports. He was a true Stanley County Buffalo fan.

Gerald is survived by his wife, Janice Young of Midland. He is also survived by two sons, Louis Young and family, Brock Brian, Spencer Todd, and Alexandria Ann, and his special friend, Deb Stoeser, and her children, A.J., Brenda, Kayleen, and Whitney, Ft. Pierre; and Gerald A. Young Jr. and his special friend, Annie Victor, West Des Moines, IA. Survivors also include three daughters, Kimberli Reeves and her husband, Kevin, and their children, Robert Louis, Samantha Fay, and Rio Gerald, Highmore, SD; Theresa McDaniel and her husband, Steve, and their children, Christopher Lynn, Colton Todd, Tucker Gerald, and Cole Michael, Midland, SD; and Laura Young and family, Sadie Korine and Jadie John, West Des Moines, IA. One brother and his wife, Merle Dale and Shirley Young, Sardis, AL; two sisters and their husbands, Hennrietta and Kenneth McNenny, Sturgis, and Judy and Jim Schweigerdt, Rapid City also survive Gerald.

His mother and father, Jennie and Merle Young, his mother and father-in-law, Margaret and Leo Keller, and a brother-in-law, Harold Keller, preceded him in death.

A memorial has been established.
