Four Corners’ wrestling season comes to an end

The Four Corners’ Wrestling Club has ended another year. Ten wrestlers came to Kirley Hall twice a week to practice with Coach Clay Riggle. The boys ranged from five and a half to 13 years of age.

Parents traveled to the country community hall to discuss the do’s and don’ts of wrestling and get in their winter workout. Families put on some miles, traveling to over 11 different tournaments across South Dakota.

The team members placed as follows: Tyrel Olson, son of Chad and Randi Olson, is a first grader at Cheyenne School. Tyrel is seven and wrestled at 55-60 pounds. He placed 7th at Ft. Pierre, 2nd at Eagle Butte, and 4th at Philip.

Austin Hand, son of Michael and Michelle Hand, is five. Austin wrestled at 40-45 pounds. Austin earned 2nd at Eagle Butte, Pierre, and Ft. Pierre. He received 3rd at Kadoka and 5th at districts, qualifying for regionals.

Christopher Cox, son of Chris and Jessica Cox, is eight and a first grader at Washington Elementary School in Pierre. Christopher wrestled at 55-60 pounds. He got 4th at Onida and Ft. Pierre, 3rd at Philip, and 6th at districts, qualifying for regionals.

Nathan Yost, son of Randy and Joy Yost, is 11 and a 5th grader at Hayes School. He wrestled at 70-75 pounds. Nathan got 4th at Onida, Ft. Pierre, and Philip, and got 3rd at districts to qualify for the regional tournament.

Chancy Riggle, son of Clay and Rea Riggle, is 13 and a 7th grader at Deep Creek School. Chancy wrestled at 120 pounds. He placed 1st at Presho, Gettysburg, Onida, and Ft. Pierre; and 2nd at Pierre and Union Center. Chancy placed first at districts and again at regionals, qualifying for the state tournament. Chancy also served as assistant coach to his dad and his uncle Shad Riggle.

Thomas Tolton, son of Neil and Tammy Tolton, is 11 and a 6th grader at Hayes School. Thomas wrestled at 95-100 pounds. He placed 1st at Gettysburg, 2nd at Rapid City Central and Eagle Butte, and 3rd at Ft. Pierre. He placed 2nd at both districts and regions, qualifying for state.

Robert Tolton, also a son of Neil and Tammy Tolton, is 10 and a 4th grader at Hayes School. Robert wrestled at 135 pounds – heavyweight. He placed 1st at Gettysburg, Rapid City Central, and Ft. Pierre; and placed 2nd at Eagle Butte. He placed 1st at both districts and regions, qualifying for the state tournament.

Other members of the club are: Chalan Hedman, 12 and a 6th grader, and Trey Hedman, 7 and a 2nd grader, are sons of Steve and Dawn Hedman. Dalton Prince, a 12-year-old 5th grader, is a son of Arlen and Nicole Prince. All three attend the Hayes School. All three qualified at regionals.

This season, three wrestlers qualified and traveled to the State AAU Wrestling Tournament in Brookings on March 24-26; Chancy Riggle and Thomas and Robert Tolton. At the two-day tournament, Thomas did not qualify to go on to the second day in the 11-12 year-old 100 pound bracket. Chancy placed 7th in the 13-14 year-old 120 pound bracket, and Robert placed 3rd in the 9-10 year-old heavyweight.

The team had a great season of wrestling, continuing to be tough competition on the mat. Clay and Rea Riggle have guided the team well, and the time and commitment they have dedicated to coaching these young men is appreciated.
