Eugene "Gene" Anthony Stoeser, 80, of Hayes/Midland, died Monday, August 25, 2008, at St. Mary's TCU in Pierre

Mass of Christian burial was celebrated Saturday, August 30, at St. John's Catholic Church, Ft. Pierre with Father Brian Christensen officiating

Interment was at Scotty Philip Cemetery, Ft. Pierre.

Gene was born April 3, 1928 in Ft. Pierre to Albert and Hatta (Wiseman) Stoeser. He grew up in Hayes where he attended Sansarc School, Sansarc, SD and St. Liborious Catholic School, Polo, SD. He graduated from Gilboa High School in Fowler, IN, in 1948. Gene was well-known for specializing in "the school of hard knocks."

Gene worked on his family farm and helped relatives in Indiana during their time of need. He worked as a telegrapher for the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in Indiana before returning to South Dakota. He married Regina Norman in Ft. Pierre on January 31, 1950.

They began their farm/ranch operation while raising a family of 5 children. Gene, Regina and their children worked at the US Post Offices in Hayes, Kirley, Lindsay and Sansarc sorting and bundling and then delivering the mail as Rural Route Carriers for over 25 years. They truly enjoyed their time of breeding and racing horses in the early 1970s through the mid 1980s with several successful winners. When Regina died on September 25, 1991, Gene continued to operate the farm/ranch.

He married long-time neighbor and friend, Juanita Riggle, on January 4, 1994. Gene and Nita are very proud of their extended family of children, in-laws, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Gene was an avid sportsman and a keen card player, "you don't want to take your eyes off him!" His most enjoyable times revolved around gathering with his family and friends in the communities of South Dakota and Minnesota.

Gene was a member of: St. John's Catholic Church, Little Flower Knights of Columbus Council, the Historical Society of Old Stanley County, Verendrye Museum Board, SD Quarter Horse Racing Association, SD Horseman's Association, Stanley County Commissioner from 1979 till 1989, SD Senior Olympics, Parkwood Poker Club, Elks Lodge, 4-Corner's Lighted Field Association, 4-Corner's Midget/Peewee and Teener Coach, 4-Corner's Fire Department.

Gene is survived by his wife, Nita; his children: Rodney (Patti) Stoeser of Ft. Pierre and their children: Chance (Erika) and Regina of Sioux Falls, Heath (Kim) and Carson of Pierre and Tyler (Tiffany) and Hudson of Pierre; Clayton (Bev) Stoeser of Ft. Pierre and their children: Tarra (Aaron Bame) and Landon of Ft. Pierre, Jason (Holli Stutsman) and Slade of Ft. Pierre and Cody of Pierre; Debra (Brad) Schiefelbein of Pierre and their children: Derek (Brittney) of Pierre, Erin (Tyler) Jones of Gilbert, AZ and Jenna (Dmitri Melius) of Sioux Falls; Norman (Heather Bilbrey and Brady) of Ft. Pierre and children Lindsay, Hunter, Matthew and Brianna and Lorena (Mark) Flannery of Excelsior, MN and their children: Amber of Waconia, MN, Lance (Amanda Kack) of Chanhasseo, MN, Shane and Amanda; two step-sons: Dan (Myrya) Riggle of TX and Rick (Nancy) Riggle of Pierre; two brothers: Ben (Phyllis) Stoeser and Bernard (Pat) Stoeser; Brother-in-law Gaylord (Betty) Norman and Sister-in-law Velma (Lynn) Wilder and Special Friends Billy and Arlyne Markwed.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Regina; his parents, Albert and Hatta Stoeser; and three brothers, Roy, Alex and John.
