Services for Ethel Sowards, age 66, of Pierre, who died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at St. Mary’s TCU in Pierre, were held Saturday, July 17, at Isburg Funeral Chapel in Pierre. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery.
Ethel Schilling was born December 29, 1937 to Richard “Dick” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Jones) Schilling in Haakon County. She grew up in rural Midland and attended school at Capa SD, graduating from the 8th grade in 1953.
Ethel lived in Capa, Midland, and Philip, SD, and was living in Pierre at the time of her death.
She worked as a waitress and a home health nurse’s aide.
Ethel enjoyed bingo, cards, bowling spectator and always had the door open for her children, grandchildren and loved ones.
She is survived by two sons, Wayne Sowards and his wife, Marianne, of Hosmer, SD, and Marvin Sowards and his wife, Connie, of LeMars, IA; three daughters, Berdinia Langdeau of Pierre, Marlene McGruder and her husband, Dave, of Highmore, Anna Sowards and her fiancé, Robert Dennis, of Pierre; two brothers, Richard “Dick” Schilling of Casper, WY, and William “Bill” Schilling of LeMars IA; four sisters, Dorothy Doud and her husband, Ed, of Ft. Pierre, Barb Thrun and her husband, Al, of Remsen, IA, Margaret Frazier and her husband, Rodney, of Pierre, and Betty Burmeister and her husband, Jerry, of Huron; 13 grandchildren, Amy, DeWayne,
Charlie and Levi Sowards, Winter, Becky and Jeremy Langdeau, Marvin Jr., Wade, Harlan and Lennie Sowards, Shiloh McGruder and Tria Dennis; and one great-grandchild, Addisyn Gruis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Lawrence “Butch” in 1999 and Lenny Sowards in 2001; and one grandchild, Jessica Sowards.
