Dorothy H. Bosanco

Dorothy H. Bosanco, age 87, Philip, S.D., died Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at the Golden Living Center in Salem.

Dorothy Helen Haerer was born February 5, 1924, to William and Minnie (Shoemaker) Haerer on their homestead 40 miles northwest of Philip, the Old Manila. On January 19, 1928, at the age of four, she lost her mother Minnie due to complications on the operating table. Her father continued to raise her and her brothers on the family farm. In 1939, her father remarried to Ruby Searle and Dorothy thought of her as a mother. On June 4, 1946, Dorothy married Robert Bosanco at Sioux Falls, and to this marriage six children were born, William "Bill," Gary, Thomas "Tom," Joseph "Joe," Judy and Frank. They lived in Midland before moving to Rochester, Minn., and moved back to the Midland, Philip and Kadoka areas.

In 1969, she lost her mother, Ruby, and a year later lost her father, William. In 1973, they lost their son, Gary, and then in 1975 Robert died in an auto accident.

Dorothy wore many different coats in her life from cleaning motel rooms or cleaning house to cooking and waitressing - even into her late 70s she thought she needed to be working. She loved to play cards and you could always find homemade popcorn balls when you went to her house. She had a love for dogs and had a couple special ones in her life. In 2006, she lost her oldest son, William, and in 2010 she lost her son, Thomas. In 2003, she moved into the Philip Nursing Home until 2009 when she moved to Golden Living Center, Salem.

The most important thing to Dorothy was her family and her unconditional love for them. Her love was tempered with patience and discipline. She was strong at whatever life threw at her and she met it with a calm and resilient toughness. She always had a genuine interest and honest concern for how things were going with her children and their families and she was truly a person who always treated people the way she wanted to be treated. She will be missed the most by her children, grandchildren and all who knew her. Heaven is a better place today. Dorothy is survived by her children, Joe Bosanco of Madison, Frank (Tonia) Bosanco of Minatare, Neb., and Judy Bosanco of Ft. Pierre; nine grandchildren, Briget, Hope, Valerie, Care, Lanie, Jeffery, Lanele, Jesse and Tiffany; 12 great-grandchildren; and one brother, Wayne (Eldena) Haerer of Sturgis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William, Minnie and Ruby Haerer; her husband, Robert; three sons, William, Thomas and Gary; and two brothers, Wallace and Russell Haerer.

Services were held Saturday, July 23, at the Open Bible Church in Midland. Burial was in the Masonic Cemetery in Philip.
