Donald M. Poste

Donald Magnus Poste died on Dec. 9, 2008, at the age of 79, at his home, following a lengthy illness.

He was born on the family ranch on Ash Creek in Grindstone, SD, on February 9, 1929, to Magdalena and Brainard Poste. His older sister, Carol, braved a winter blizzard to summons the county midwife for his entrance into their lives.

Donald attended school in Philip, SD. After finishing school, he entered the United States Air Force and was assigned as a Chief Crewman on a C-97 Troop Transport. He then met and married the light in his eye, Candace Virginia (Ginny) Hayes, on November 3, 1956. They started their family in South Dakota and moved to Casper in 1969.

During his lifetime, he and Ginny were entrepreneurs and wore many hats. This led to many deep friendships across the country. One of Don's ventures was working at the Nicolaysen in Casper. He enjoyed history and never stopped learning and telling stories to share his knowledge of the world. He was an adventurous lover of nature, fishing, hunting and camping and was a great lover of animals.

Survivors include his wife, Ginny; their daughter, Becky Slack, grandchildren Ryan, Douglas and Ashlee and father, Mark Slack, of Riverton; son, Ross and wife, Lisa, grandchildren, Alicia, Aaron and Allyce' Thomas of Westminster, CO; son, John of Riverton; and son, Weston and wife, Shannon, grandchildren, Garret and Dawson of Casper.

Donald is preceded in death by an infant son, Douglas; and two brothers, Max and Gene. He was also preceded in death by three sisters, Carol, Mildred and Delores.

Memorial services were held Friday, December 12, at St. Anthony's Church with military internment following at the Veteran's Cemetery in Evansville.

In lieu of flowers, Donald's family requests donations to be made to St. Margaret's School in Riverton, WY, where Don last worked and attended church.
