Dean Nachtigall, 63, passed away suddenly at his home near Owanka, SD, on June 23, 2008.
Dean was born in Rapid City, SD, on April 3, 1945, to John and Lura (Roberts) Nachtigall. He grew up and attended grade school in the Lakeside area. After graduating from New Underwood High School, he attended Huron College and Black Hills State before coming back to ranch on the home place in 1966.
Dean married Barbara Brown in 1966 at Rapid City. They lived on the home place before moving onto their own place in 1970. To this union three sons were born: Stanley in 1968, Neal in 1970 and Mitch in 1982. He was extremely active and supporting of his family. Dean applied his talents to coaching and helping many grade school teams and clubs from basketball and softball to 4-H.
In 1995, he married Margaret Englebert of Rapid City, and they intertwined their livelihoods, lives and families as they continued to successfully run the ranch. Dean welcomed, with great love and support, Rosie, Cissie, Everett and their families.
Dean was blessed with many grandchildren, and was their 'number one fan'. He spent countless hours, attending and cheering, at every type of event.
Dean spent his life in agriculture. He was a long time rancher through 2004, when he "semi-retired" and worked very successfully selling advertising for County Wide Directory. He said "I don't care whether they buy from me or not, I enjoy visiting with them." This was very typical of Dean, he never knew a stranger.
Dean was a long time member and past president of the Western South Dakota Buckaroos. He was a strong and active supporter of community and served on many boards. They include the Lakeside Old Settlers, Lakeside Cemetery, Lakeside Water Users, Township, and others. He was instrumental in procuring the water system for the Lakeside community.
Dean had great respect for the land and spent untold hours nurturing and grooming grasses, plants, shrubs and trees into functional and beautiful settings that everyone admired and enjoyed.
Dean was the best neighbor, best father, best husband, best grandfather and best friend that any of us knew.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret; two sons, Neal (Lisa), Sioux Falls, Mitch, Rapid City; step-children, Rosie (Marty) Elmore, Hot Springs, Cissie Englebert, Newcastle, WY, Everett (Dawn) Englebert, Burdock; 11 grandchildren; sister, Audrey Wieser, Owanka; brother, Daren, Owanka; sister, Kay (Jack) Overland, Red Owl; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents John and Lura; son, Stanley; and a brother, James.
Services were held on Friday, June 27 at the New Underwood School Gymnasium with Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial followed at the Lakeside Cemetery.
