David P. Ulmen

David Ulmen, age 67 of Kadoka, SD, died October 31, 2008, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Wednesday, November 5, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Kadoka, with Father Bryan Sorensen as celebrant and Father Ron Garry as con-celebrant.

Music was provided by Marianne Frein, pianist, and Maureen Palecek, vocalist.

Ushers were Bob and Jim Fugate. Pallbearers were Floyd "Buzz" Stiles, Jr., Cliff Parke, Jerry Schimkat, Marc Ulmen, Ray Jarvi and Rex Totton.

Interment with military honors by the Sturgis Honor Guard was Wednesday, November 5, at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.

David Paul Ulmen was born August 9, 1941, in Bismarck, ND, the son of Conrad and Frieda (Rausch) Ulmen. They lived in Bismarck until 1952, when the family moved to Pierre. After graduating from Pierre High School in 1959, Dave attended Northern State College, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration in 1965.

Dave entered the United States Army on October 1, 1965, serving in Vietnam. After receiving his honorable discharge on October 4, 1967, Dave moved to Pierre where he worked for the South Dakota State Highway Department until 1971. He then worked for the Department of Legislative Audit.

Dave married Susan Brothanek in 1971, and to this union a daughter, Tami Sue, was born on November 7, 1972. Dave worked for the Belle Fourche School District as the business manager from 1973 until 1991.

Dave married Patty Fugate on January 2, 1987, in Rapid City, and to this union a daughter, Kimberly Dawn, was born on February 21, 1988. Dave, Patty, and Kim moved to Kadoka in 1992, where Dave was the business manager for the Crazy Horse School District from 1992 until 1996, when health reasons forced him to retire.

Dave is survived by his wife, Patty, of Kadoka; two daughters, Kimberly Ulmen, who attends Black Hills State University, and Tami, who lives in Broomfield, CO; a brother, Jim Ulmen and his wife, Judy, of Pierre; three brothers-in-law, Bob Fugate and his wife, Kathy, Bill Fugate and his wife, Lauri, all of Kadoka, and Andrew Rej of Denver, CO; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Patricia Reidy Rej; his mother and father-in-law, Edgar and Floy Fugate; and his first wife, Susan (Brothanek) Wright.
