Cross Country update
After weeks of training with everything from six-plus-mile runs to 14 quarter-mile sprint repeats, the Scotties competed at the Winner Invitational.
The junior varsity - 8th grader Jennifer Stangle, 7th grader Kalvin Ferguson and 8th grader Zane Pekron - ran first. Pekron pushed himself to lead the 43 runners, battling with several strong opponents, to finish in 15:46 and placing 4th among the boys. Ferguson had pushed his way steadily through the field to finish in 19:59, giving him 22nd among the boys. Stangle had also moved up to finish 10th among the girls with a time of 20:09. She improved her 2005 course time by 4:32. With the boys' first cross country start, this was a great race for all three.
The girls' varsity, with only three runners, could not compete as a team in this A division race. Our only senior, 6th-year runner Katie Coyle, was temporarily on the injured list. Brandy Bartels (3rd year) ran with the lead group, and Dondee Fees (5th year) and Emily Schofield (2nd year) ran with the main group. The rain continued as Bartels went through the 4,000 meter race, earning 20th place in 18:13 and bettering her 2005 course time by 38 seconds. Schofield (JV last year) placed 28th in 19:20, a course improvement of 5:12. Fees finished 31st in 19:59, with a 14 second improvement.
The sun came out for the varsity boys' run. Anthony Iwan (4th year) and Kyle Iwan (2nd year) both lapped some competitors on the 2-1/2 lap course. Kyle placed 13th in 20:09. Anthony placed 17th in 21:25, a course improvement of 3:32.
The next day was the Faith Invitational. Allison Pekron and Holly Iwan started fast in the girls' one mile youth run. Iwan was edged out at the finish to take 3rd place in 6:03, a course improvement of 43 seconds. Pekron finished 14th in 8:21.
Mark and Ben Stangle ran in the boys' youth run. Ben finished in 5th place in 7:00, while Mark finished in 9th in 9:09.
In the junior varsity 3,000 meter run, J. Stangle finished 4th for the girls in 14:33, a bettering of 51 seconds. Z. Pekron took 2nd in 11:47, while Ferguson earned 8th place.
In the girls' varsity, Bartels finished the 4,000 meter race in 7th place and in 18:37, a 42 second improvement. Schofield finished 11th with a time of 20:08 on her first Faith run. Fees earned 14th in 21:56. All three girls medaled and took second place behind Kadoka in this 3-person-team race.
In boys' varsity, K. Iwan came from mid-pack to take 7th in 20:42. A. Iwan battled a Faith runner to take 10th place in 21:49, bettering last year's time by 1:46.
The heat, humidity, mosquitoes, and competition brought quality performances from the Scotties at the Pierre meet on September 7. In junior varsity, J. Stangle earned 12th place out of 21 girl runners. The time of 21:18 took 1:10 off last year's time, and was her personal best. The boys' JV 2.5 mile run included A. Iwan, who took 6th in 16:22. Z. Pekron ran a 16:51 to take 10th place, and Ferguson took 29th in 23:46.
Girls' varsity saw an improvement in all the Scottie girls. Out of 41 runners, Bartels took 22nd in 18:51. Schofield cut 1:55 off her time to 20:20, giving her 33rd place. Fees took 35th in 21:20.
K. Iwan was the lone Philip runner in boys' varsity. He finished 20th in 20:26.
At the Kadoka Invitational on September 9th, the fog and low temperatures made excellent running conditions.
Holly Iwan placed 3rd in the elementary run.
The junior varsity boys' race saw Pekron take second place in 17:45. Ferguson placed 15th in 23:03. They both medaled.
Twelve schools were represented in the girls' varsity run. Bartels took 12th in 19:27; Schofield finished 19th in 21:44; and Fees also medaled for the girls when she took 20th place in 21:55. Stangle was the fourth member on the three-count team, and was the "pusher" who broke a 3rd/4th place tie to give the Scotties third place.
The rain stopped for the boys' varsity run. Kyle and Anthony Iwan ran together for the first part of the race. Going into a full sprint at the end, Kyle took 17th in 20:26. Anthony sprinted against a Faith runner, and edged him out to take 17th place.
Results of the White River run held on September 11 will be reported next issue.
The Philip Scottie cross country team will host their next meet at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 21, in the Philip West River Classic on Lake Waggoner Golf Course.
