He attended West Fork and Cheyenne rural schools prior to graduating from Philip High School in 1973. As a young man, he worked with his parents on the farm-ranch. He and his brother, Mark, did custom farming in the Milesville area for a period of time.

Craig was united in marriage to Debbie Mowell on August 5, 1978, in Philip, SD. They made their home on his parents' farm-ranch a mile west of his parents. In 1982, they moved to the Big Stone Ranch near the Cheyenne River, where they continued to reside, farm and ranch until his death.

Craig attended the Hardingrove Church in Milesville and the United Church in Philip. He served on the Haakon County School Board of Education for a total of 18 years. He was a member of the Howes Grazing Association and various other livestock associations. Craig was an avid outdoorsman enjoying four-wheeling, snowmobiling, motorcycling and classic cars.

He also enjoyed attending farm and ranch shows, but most of all he enjoyed his grandson, Torin.
