Celebration of Life golf tourney and concert
A scholarship fundraiser entitled "Jennifer Nelson Celebration of Life" was held Sunday, September 12, at the Lake Waggoner Golf Course, Philip.
Over 100 people were in attendance during the various festivities. Teams competed in a golf tournament, followed by a community roast beef supper served by the combined United and First Lutheran Youth Group. The evening climaxed with a public concert featuring local artists and the Christian band Scarlet Letter.
The golf tournament consisted of four-person teams who were vying for pin prizes and door prizes during a scramble-format game. Glenn and Dianne Parsons and Dean and Janice Fitzgerald won the golfing part of the day.
The supper was well attended. Then the entertainment began. The opening acts were two local groups. The singing duo of Kianna Knutson and Marcus Martinez performed several songs. Then Philip's local, fledgling, rock band One Night Only also performed several songs. The main draw for the musical section of the evening was the Christian rock band Scarlet Letter based out of Sioux Falls. After a set of worship music, they paused for speaker James Burnett, a religions orator from Florida who currently is touring with the band. The band then continued playing Christian rock music until well past closing time.
"The people who were here had only good things to say," said Nicki Nelson, who organized the event to raise funds to go towards finding a cure for cystic fibrosis. "It was a beautiful day and a beautiful evening."
