C. Lilburn “Slim” Fugate

Clarence Lilburn “Slim” Fugate, 98, Rapid City, died Tuesday June 7, 2005, at West Hills Health Care.

Services were held Friday, June 10, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Bill Paepke officiating. Burial was at Mt. View Cemetery, Rapid City.

He was born Dec. 26, 1906, at Prentice, WI; to Hugh and Ibbie (Repass) Fugate. In 1910, he came with his parents to Nemo, SD, where he attended school until 1918 when he moved with his parents to Rapid City, where he lived until his death.

Slim graduated from Rapid City High School in 1924 and also attended school at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Grand Island Business College where he graduated with an accounting degree.

He was engaged in office work at various businesses including Warren-Lamb Lumber Co; EAFB and Mayflower as an accountant, retiring in 1968.

On June 11, 1948, he married Emilie Reiman in Brookings, SD. He and Emilie moved to Westhills Village in 1984 as one of the original residents. He was active in various programs at Westhills Village, including singing performances of the Westhills singers. He was one of the founding members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and he enjoyed writing poetry and music.

He is survived by his wife, Emilie, Rapid City; two nephews, Robert and wife, Kathy Fugate; William and wife, Lauri Fugate, all of Kadoka; two nieces, Patty and husband, Dave Ulmen, Kadoka; Janet and husband, Ron Rabern, Presho; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Francis Wills and Ina Brakke, and one brother, Edgar Fugate.

A memorial has been established to benefit the Bethlehem Lutheran Church where he was a long-time member.
