Blood drive in Philip May 8 at Fine Arts Building

Local residents have the opportunity to further celebrate life by joining in the community blood drive from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 8, at the Fine Arts Building at the Philip High School. This blood drive is being sponsored by the Community Betterment Committee (the Birthday Gals).

Not only will people earn a good feeling after donating blood at the drive, but they will also be able to check their total cholesterol level. United Blood Services now offers free cholesterol testing to blood donors. It does a "total cholesterol" test that allows donors to eat before the test - no fasting is required.

"We use the 'total cholesterol' test because it's important for donors to have a healthy meal before they donate," said Beth-Anne Ferley, Donor Recruitment Director with United Blood Services. It is recommended that adults 20 years and older have a different cholesterol test, called a lipoprotein profile, every five years, which requires a 12-hour fast and is done at a physician's office or lab.

Donors can check their confidential results at www.unitedbloodservices.org the week after their blood donation.

Blood donors must be 17 years or older and in good health. Donors are asked to bring a photo ID and Donor Card every time they donate. First-time donors receive a donor card with their blood type in the mail shortly after their first donation.

People who wish to donate at the blood drive may schedule an appointment by calling 800-834-8525 or logging on to the website.
