Badlands District Fire School planned

The annual Badlands District Fire School will this year be held in Kadoka on Sunday, September 24. The training is highly recommended for all area fire fighters, and firefighters from other districts are welcome.

Registration will be from 7:00 to 8:00 a.m. There is a department and individual cost, but often the fire departments pay for their volunteers to attend. Morning classes will be from 8:00 to 11:00. Lunch and the annual business meeting will be from 11:00 to 12:30. Afternoon classes will resume at 12:30 and end at 3:00.

Classes offered

"Self Contained Breathing Apparatus - Smoke House" with Joe Tjaden of the Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters learn to traverse a burning and smoky building while they are wearing breathing gear.

"Propane Tree" with an instructor from the South Dakota Fire Marshall's Office. Marty Hansen, chief of the Philip VFD said, "This class is awesome. It simulates a fire on top of a propane tank. You walk up to it in two teams, pushing the fire away with two different fog nozzles, and one firefighter reaches down to shut off the propane valve."

"Ventilation Basics" with Cory Hoffrogge from the Pierre VFD.

Any questions may be directed to Badlands District President Curt Arthur of the Milesville VFD, James VanTassell of the Midland VFD, Rich Bendt of the Kadoka VFD, or Reuben Vollmer, Jr. - a State Director and the Fire Chief for the Midland VFD.
