Ardith L. McKown

Ardith Louise McKown, 80, of Hot Springs, passed away December 23, 2005, at her home in Hot Springs, SD.

Ardith Louise was born at home on a farm close to St. Lawrence, SD on February 21, 1925, to V. Arthur and Viola (Turner) Moon. She graduated from St. Lawrence High School in 1943 and from St. Mary’s Hospital and School of Nursing as a registered nurse in 1946. She immediately went to work at Hand County Memorial Hospital in Miller, where 2nd Lt. Roy McKown was a patient due to a tragic auto accident.

Ardith and Roy were married on October 10, 1946. To this union two sons and three daughters were born.

Ardith spent 35 years caring for others’ health. After her first heart by-pass surgery in 1979, her own health failed and she retired from Black Hills VA Medical Center in Hot Springs. She was always able to find work at hospitals close to where they lived as the family moved to several locations while involved in the weekly newspaper profession at Miller, Bridgewater, Philip and Edgemont.

Survivors include husband, Roy McKown of Hot Springs, SD; two sons, Marlin (Jo) McKown of Gillette, WY; Michael McKown of Custer, SD; three daughters, Barbara (Randy) Barkley of Riverside, CA; Ellen (Charles) Heafner of Hot Springs, SD; Judith (Art) Licht of Gillette, WY; brother, Norman (Wanelda) Moon; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Vincent and his wife, Marge.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 28, at the United Churches in Hot Springs with Pastor Morris Nelson officiating.

Inurnment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in Ardith’s name to fund a nursing scholarship. Memorials can be sent to the Ardith McKown Memorial Fund c/o: Ellen Heafner, 301 South 18th Street, Hot Springs, SD 57747.
