AAU state wrestling 2009

The Philip AAU wrestling team, coached by Joe Carley and Randy Johnson, had 12 members earn their way to the 2009 AAU state wrestling tournament held in Aberdeen at the Barnett Center on Saturday, March 28.

Last year, 10 members earned the right to continue on to the state tournament.

Returning state attendants were Keegan Fitch (nine and 10-year-old age bracket, 75 pounds division), Rance Johnson (11-12, 65 lbs.), Nick Donnelly (11-12, 80 lbs.), Jace Giannonatti (11-12, 105 lbs.), Grady Carley (11-12, 100 lbs.),  Jacob Kammerer (11-12, 85 lbs.), and Reed Johnson (13-14, 115 lbs.). First time qualifiers were Eastan West (6 and under, 40 lbs.), Dawson Reedy (9-10, 60 lbs.), Colby Fitch (7-8, 60 lbs.), Brayden Fitch (13-14, 120 lbs.), and Austin Pinney (13-14, 120 lbs.).

The top eight placers in each division received medals at the state tournament. Eight wrestlers from the Philip team earned medals. These were West - 4th place, Fitch - 6th, Rance Johnson - 1st, Donnelly - 2nd, Carley - 3rd, Giannonatti - 8th, Reed Johnson - 4th, and Pinney - 8th.

According to LaDonna Giannonatti-Johnson, the AAU and high school wrestlers will hold a combined potluck awards banquet on Tuesday, April 14, at 5:00 p.m. in the Philip elementary gym.
