Country school teacher on billboard

Theresa Deuchar, instructor at the newly re-opened Deep Creek rural school, is the subject on a billboard approximately one mile south of Fort Pierre along Highway 83.
The billboard campaign by West Central Electric Cooperatives, Inc. began the week of August 20. The preliminary work-up and original photography was actually done in the spring of last school year. Then, Deuchar was one of the instructors at Milesville rural school, but then the Deep Creek rural school was re-opened for this school year. The billboard advertisement is expected to remain up for two years.

Lois J. Schrader Patton

Lois Patton, loving wife, mother, friend, and educator, passed away on August 24, 2012, after a long, courageous battle with esophageal cancer.

Sister Agnes Ann Holzapfel

Sister Agnes Ann Holzapfel, age 96, of Milwaukee, Wisc., formerly of Philip, S.D., died Thursday, August 30, 2012, at her residence in Milwaukee.
Sister Agnes Ann Holzapfel, SSSF, was born in Dusseldorf, Germany, on February 27, 1916, the daughter of William and Anna (Heimbach) Holzapfel. At the age of eight, Sister Agnes emigrated to the United States with her mother and younger sister Annaliese. They settled in Milwaukee for two years before moving to a small farm near Ottumwa, where Sister Agnes attended country school.

Gladys A. Smith

Gladys Smith, age 92 of Quinn, S.D., died Tuesday, August 28, 2012, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Gladys Arthene Knodel was born December 22, 1919, at Wall, to Gustave and Lois (Lathrop) Knodel.
She lived in the Peno Basin area and attended elementary school at Big White. She stayed with Lynn and Lucille Lathrop and attended one year of high school at Nolan. In 1934, her parents moved her to a small farm outside Richfield, Idaho, where Gladys finished high school and started college in the area.

James W. “Jim” Gottsleben

James W. “Jim” Gottsleben, age 83 of Philip, S.D., died Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at the Philip Nursing Home.
James William Gottsleben was born April 14, 1929, to William and Helen (Gehan) Gottsleben in Pierre. Jim grew up ranching and lived most of his life on the Gottsleben Ranch, which was homesteaded by his grandparents in 1907.

Eleanor Harkin

Eleanor Harkin, age 93, of Interior, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Eleanor Louise Vifquain was born May 9, 1919, in Springview, Neb., the daughter of Elmer V. and Nellie (Kenaston) Vifquain. She grew up on a farm near Springview, and graduated from Keya Paha High School in Springview, in 1937. As a young lady she worked in Alliance, Neb., as a waitress and also worked at St. Agnes Academy.

August 23, 1928
During the past week a fine new piece of equipment, a Light Therapy machine has been installed by Dr. Ramsey in his office. The machine is used for the removal of warts and moles and similar growths and for the treatment of rheumatism, lumbago, and injuries, by the means of heat rays. The new device already has several remarkable cures to its credit since installation.

Delane Robert Nixon was born September 25, 1948, in Philip, S.D., to Robert and Maxine (Fortune) Nixon. In 1949, the family moved to a ranch near Ridge, Mont. He attended grade school in the area at different country schools taught by his mother.

August 8th

Irene Fortune

Irene Fortune, age 94, of Philip, South Dakota , died August 7, 2012, at the Philip Nursing Home.

Irene Clements was born April 20, 1918, in Haakon County, South Dakota, the daughter of Ernest and Elfreida (Meyers) Clements. She grew up and attended rural schools in the area. During her high school years, she lived with Mrs. Senechal in Philip. She learned many things from her, including cooking and cleaning.
