Floyd “Speed” Bendickson____________

Floyd “Speed” Bendickson, age 81 of Philip, S.D., died Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Floyd B. “Speed” Bendickson, was born September 14, 1931, in Henning, Minn., the son of Benny and Bertha (Underhill) Bendickson. He started his ranching career working for Bob and Inga Blair at the age of 14.
Floyd enlisted into the U.S. Army in December, 1950 and served in the Army Rangers in Korea. He was wounded and was in the hospital in Japan. He returned home 1954.


Arla Faith Kunz__________________

Faith Kunz, age 73, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Philip, died Thursday evening, July 11, 2013, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.
Arla Faith Johnson was born on August 9, 1939 in Wasta to A.E. “Doll” and Fern (Crosmer) Johnson. She grew up in the heart of the Badlands in Interior and graduated valedictorian from Interior High School in 1957.
As a young woman, she moved to Omaha, Neb., to attend airline hostess training. In the fall of 1958, she attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, where she met her future husband, Ted K. Kunz.


Myrtle Alma Rose Holst____________

Myrtle Alma Rose Holst, age 89, of Denton, Texas, died January 15, 2013, at the Silver Stone Home in Denton.
Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, July 21, at the Rose Cemetery near Creighton, S.D., with Duane Holst officiating.
The funeral procession will be leaving the Wall Drug Store in Wall at 10:30 a.m. Sunday for those that want to go with the family to the cemetery.
Myrtle Alma Rose Holst was born on November 20, 1923, in a log cabin in Pennington County to Freeman and Penila (Potter) Rose.


Dr. Thomas F. Malone___________________________

Dr. Thomas F. Malone, son of the late John and Mary Malone, Haakon County homesteaders near Milesville, S.D., passed away at his home in West Hartford, Conn., on July 6, 2013. He was 96.

Fourth of July Fireworks at Waggoner

The Philip Volunteer Fire Department presented its annual fireworks display at dusk, Wednesday, July 3, over Lake Waggoner. Patriotic music was played over 96.7 radio during the fireworks display. Fire Chief Matt Reckling said that the crowd seemed to be pretty good sized. The free will donations helped support the $5,000 cost for the fireworks and will help to make next year’s display even larger.


Kloppers are naturalized citizens

After moving from South Africa to Philip by way of Canada in 1991, Coenraad (Coen) and Trudie Klopper became United States naturalized citizens June 27, 2013.
They were part of a 150-person naturalization ceremony held at Mount Rushmore National Memorial by the United States District Court of South Dakota.

Jean M. Burns________________________

Jean M. Burns, age 90 of Philip, S.D., died July 7, 2013, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip, surrounded by her family.
Jean Mae Burns, the first child of Frank and Joy Keve Hauk, was born May 18, 1923. Her childhood was spent with her siblings, George, Max and Mary Joy Hauk on a farm northwest of Grindstone.
She worked her way through high school by being a mother's helper to the Bartholmew family and roomed at the old Winchester Hotel.


Vito M. Portanova__________________________

Vito M. Portanova, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, great-great- grandfather and friend was called home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 24, 2013.
Vito was born June 3, 1920 in Boston, Mass., to Vito M. and Josephine Portanova. Much of his youth was spent in Boston until he joined the U.S. Navy in 1940. In 1944 while stationed in San Diego, California, he met the love of his life, Vera Eckert of Midland, S.D. They were married May 14, 1944, and shared 69 years of love together.


Gayla J. Brink____________________________

Gayla J. Brink, 59, of Rapid City, passed away on Thursday, June 27, 2013 at Rapid City Regional Hospital, surrounded by family and friends.
Born to Clifton and Beatrice “Bea” Long, she grew up and graduated high school in Bison, South Dakota. She married Lyle Brink in 1972 whom she raised her family with in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Helen Muriel R. Kjos______________

Helen Muriel R. Kjos, 93, formerly of Philip, S.D., passed away Monday, June 17, 2013, at the Hospice House of Campbell County in Gillette, Wyo.
Helen was born February 12, 1920, in Rapid City to Ned and Lera (Young) Ronning.
