James E. Carr, Jr._______________

James E. Carr, Jr., 74, went home July 6, 2014, in Pueblo, Colo.
He was born February 8, 1940, in Rapid City, S.D. He lived in Philip until graduating from high school.
James was an avid NASCAR fan and avid reader. James would read a variety of novels. He was always happy, had a great smile and a contagious laugh.
Jim is survived by his wife, Deanna; stepchildren, Bryon Mobley, Tammy Bobo, Scott Kemph and Brad Kemph; his sister, Connie Lee; one niece; and two nephews.
He was preceded in death were his parents, Jim and Iola Carr; and a brother-in-law, William Lee.


Jerri LeRaye (Cordes) Howard_______

Jerri L. Howard, 31, passed away on Saturday, July 26, 2014.
Jerri was born August 10, 1982, in Pierre, S.D., the daughter of Cathy L. (Hanrahan) Erdmann.
Her elementary years were at Pierre and Haakon County schools. Jerri's young teen and high school years were in Rapid City at St. Thomas More, graduating in 2000. She also attended South Dakota State University in Brookings.
Jerri spent many years working in the banking/finance industry, where her contagious smile and knack for numbers made her a valuable employee.


Philip Eggers___________________

Philip Eggers, age 40, of Brookings, S.D., died on Monday, July 28, 2014.
Services were held Saturday, August 2, at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings.
Philip was born on March 31, 1974, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Bud and Peggy (Christie) Eggers. The family later moved to Philip where he grew up and attended school.
Philip graduated from Philip High School in 1992, and later graduated with a bachelor of science degree in construction management from South Dakota State University.


Arlene McKinley_________________

Arlene McKinley, age 94, of Midland, S.D., died Saturday, August 2, 2014, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.
Arlene Lucille McKinley was born June 26, 1920, at Custer, the oldest child of Kerfred Beck and Flora (Mann) Beck. She grew up in Custer and graduated from Custer High School in 1939. She then went to Open Bible College in Des Moines, Iowa.


Edna E. Buckles_________________

Edna Elna Buckles, age 95 of Rapid City, S.D., died July 30, 2014, at the Clarkson Health Care Facility in Rapid City.
Edna Elna Hicks was born December 7, 1918, at Martin, the seventh of 10 children born to Arthur and Blanche (Frickey) Hicks. Growing up on her parents’ farm near Martin gave her a love of the land and the rural life.
Following her schooling, she worked as a waitress when she met a blue-eyed truck driver named Charles Ira Buckles. She married Charlie on November 12, 1941. To this union, two sons were born, Richard Charles and Keith Douglas.

Maurice F. Young_______________________________

Maurice Frank Young, age 80, of Martin, S.D., died July 21, 2014, at the Bennett County Nursing Home in Martin.
Maurice Frank Young was born June 17, 1934, at home on the ranch in the Wanblee area. He grew up in Wanblee, and attended first grade in Kadoka. He then went with the Shriners to Minneapolis for a couple years where he received his education. After a polio outbreak, his parents brought him back to the ranch.

With his family by his side, George passed peacefully into the hands of the Lord on July 11, 2014 after a long struggle with cancer.

Rosalie Ann Hudson_______________

Rosalie Ann Hudson, age 69, of Yankton, S.D., passed away with her family by her side at the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton June 16, 2014.
Rosalie Ann was born August 12, 1944, in Philip to Edwil Dale and Evelyn (Gartner) Stephenson. She was baptized at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip and confirmed at Lutheran Memorial in Pierre.


Merlene E. Rank__________________

Merlene Elizabeth Rank, age 87, Rapid City, S.D., passed away Monday June 16, 2014 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Merlene was born on December 9, 1926, in Rapid City to Clarence and Margarite (Pitz) Root of Midland. She was raised in Midland and graduated from Midland High School in 1945.
Merlene married Thurman Rank on December 14, 1946, in Midland. The couple made their home in the Rapid City area from 1957 to 1972. From 1972 until Thurman’s death in 1993, they lived and ranched in the Hermosa area. She spent the last years of her life in Rapid City at Fairmont Grand Manor.

Willert is CowBos bronc ride winner

Jeff Willert, Belvidere, came out on top at Philip’s Invitational Matched Bronc ride, Friday, June 13. During the first round, shown above, Willert scored a 78 which was good enough to advance him to the short go. Winning the first round with a 79 was Travis Nelson, Philip. Willert’s ride in the short go scored 88 points. There was no score lower than an 81 from the eight riders in the short go.
