The Philip Lady Scotties held their annual Philip Volleyball Tournament, Saturday, September 10.

First, the eight teams competed in two pools of four teams each. Philip came out of three preliminary matches with a win over Jones County, a win over Lead/Deadwood and a loss to Harding County. Then in the championship bracket, the Lady Scotties lost to Belle Fourche and to Colome to come away with fourth place in the tournament.

Belle Fourche took first place, Harding County - second, Colome - third.

The Philip Lady Scotties hosted the Lyman Raiders and the Stanley County Lady Buffaloes, Thursday, September 8.

Philip fell to Lyman 3-0, with game scores of 22-25, 21-25 and 26-28.

Serving: Philip - 55 of 69 (12 aces). Leaders: Sayde Slovek - 14 of 15 (1 ace), Sam Johnson - 4 of 6 (3 aces), Josie Guptill - 8 of 8 (1 ace.

Receiving: Philip - 67 of 74. Leaders: Krista Wells - 25 of 27, Slovek - 19 of 22, Guptill - 12 of 13.

Setting: Philip - 96 of 104 (18 assists).

The Lady Scotties won their second match of the season, in front of a hometown audience, with a 3-0 sweep over the Jones County Lady Coyotes, Tuesday, September 6.

The varsity game scores were 25-14, 25-16 an 25-23.

Serving: Philip - 64 of 76 (13 aces). Leaders: Josie Guptill - 20 of 20 (8 aces), Sayde Slovek - 12 of 14 (1 ace), Katlin Knutson - 8 of 11 (1 ace). Jones County - 47 of 60 (5 aces)

Setting: Philip - 85 of 87 (15 assists).

Change can be difficult, as the Scotties found out at a relocated Pierre Invitational Cross Country Meet, Thursday, September 8.

Due to flooding, this race was held on a park adjacent to the Heritage Museum in Pierre. A smaller area meant running three loops around a low-lying marsh, combined with heat, but you must race the competition not the course - a task that many took very well.

Junior varsity girls ran 4,000 meters. Eighth grader Ellie Coyle's strategy was to go out with the lead group and let them dictate the early pace.

The Philip Scotties hosted the White River Tigers, Friday, September 9, for Philip's Homecoming game as well as for Philip's parents' recognition night.

The Scotties received the first kickoff. Their possession lasted up to 10:18 on the clock and up to the 50-yard line on the field, when a fumble was recovered by White River. Within minutes, in retribution, Philip forced a White River fumble, but on the Scotties' own 11-yard line.

Golden West Telecommunications Cooperative members will be able to vote in three board member contests at the cooperative's 59th annual meeting Saturday, September 24, in Wall.

All members who attend will receive a free noon meal, a chance to win a $500 grand prize and a registration gift. In addition, the Shrine of Democracy Chorus of Rapid City will entertain attendees with their barbershop harmony.

This year, three of Golden West's 15 board seats are up for election.

The Philip City Council meeting Tuesday, September 6, began by approving payment of pending bills which totaled $154,471.46. This included salaries and benefits of $36,611.01. It also included a pay requisition of $53,308 for the geo-thermal project, which is being done by Philip Health Services, Inc.

Deb Snook, mathematics and physics instructor at Philip High School, is one of three state finalists for the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

The three state finalists will give presentations at the South Dakota State Conference for Science and Mathematics Teachers, February 2-4, 2012, in Huron. They will be guests of honor at the conference's banquet and will receive certificates and plaques.

"Hope you never have to use it," was the first comment by Midwest Cooperative's Philip site manager Jay Baxter in presenting a new self contained breathing apparatus (CSBA) unit to the Philip Volunteer Fire Department.

The $5,425 unit was supplemented by another unit purchased by the PVFD.

Trimming the budget through insurance and liquor license requests stymied the Haakon County  Commission at their meeting Tuesday, September 6.

Bart and Marcy Ramsey, owners of South Fork Ranch, a pheasant preserve and hunting location west of Philip, submitted an application for a county liquor license. Auditor Patsy Freeman said the county can have four liquor licenses based on the county's rural population. At present, three of the licenses are used.
