City council looks at beer gardens, railroad, bills, road projects and swimming pool

One of the first items addressed at the Philip City Council meeting Tuesday, July 5, was to schedule a special public hearing Thursday, July 14, at 4:00 p.m. in the Haakon County Courthouse community room on the chamber's application for a special malt beverage license.

The Philip Chamber of Commerce's special events application for Scotty Philip Days has been amended. The chamber wishes to enlarge the beer garden to also be under the tent, and to increase the beer garden hours.

County's opt-out of $250,000 effective January 2012

by Nancy Haigh

Since no petition was taken out to bring to vote the Haakon County Commission's $250,000 opt-out resolution, it will go into effect January 2012.

All funds from the increase in taxes will go directly into the road and bridge fund. The news came just as the commission began 2012 budget discussions Friday, June 15, at 1:00 p.m.

The commission's July 5, 2011, meeting was quiet as they took care of routine matters.

Kenny Neville brought before the commission the matter of road graveling for a landowner north of Midland.

Philip to Fort Pierre wagon train agenda

The communities of Philip, Midland and Fort Pierre, and all points in between, invite everyone to join in on the Verendrye Museum Association sponsored, 100th anniversary Historic Bad River Trail Scotty Philip Memorial Ride, or to visit the evening programs as the wagon train follows the old Bad River Trail.

Programs will feature authors, historians, local historians and period music.
