The Philip High School Lady Scotties ended their 2010-2011 basketball season in a District 14B play-off game in Wall against the Wall Eagles.

The Tuesday, February 22, game ended 27-52 against the Scotties.

The first quarter saw a slow start for the Scotties. The scores of the two teams during the second quarter were more even, but Wall still increased its lead.

The Philip Scottie boys' basketball team hosted the Kadoka Kougars, Friday, February 25.

Before a home audience packed because of Parents' Night, the Scotties spent the first minute of the game setting up an offensive play that put them first on the scoreboard with a field goal. The Kougars countered with their own, but then began falling behind. As the buzzer for the first quarter sounded, Kadoka sank a three pointer to put the score at 11-8.

Within just seconds of the start of the second quarter, the Kougars whooshed another three pointer to tie the game at 11-11.

After the Philip Area Scotties team tied for second place at the 2011 Region 4B Wrestling Tournament, it had nine athletes qualified for the Class "B" State Wrestling Tournament held at the Barnett Center on the Northern State University campus in Aberdeen, Friday and Saturday, February 25 and 26.

The top four wrestlers from the regional tournament's 14 weight classes advanced to the state tournament.

Philip Area individuals came back with two fourth places, one by Lane Blasius in the 130 pound weight division and one by Clint Nelson in the 215 pound weight division.

With just a month remaining until this year's science extravaganza, it is time to begin wrapping up projects and polishing presentations.

A distinguished panel of judges has been selected and Carmen One Skunk has begun the registration process.

As in the past, the area's eager young scientists will be setting up their displays between 3:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Thursday, March 24, in the Philip elementary gymnasium. At 4:00 p.m., all others will be asked to leave so that the judges will be able to meet with the even numbered students to discuss their findings.

Five nominating petitions for four Haakon School District Board of Education seats were filed by the deadline of 5:00 p.m., Friday, February 25. Those petitions were filed by challengers Doug Thorson and Tim Quinn, and by incumbents Vonda Hamill, Scott Brech and Anita Peterson.

Only two nominating petitions for Philip City Council positions for Wards I, II and III were filed by the same deadline. Councilmen Greg Arthur and Tom Struble have filed petitions for reelection, and are unopposed. Monte Palecek has stated that he will not be seeking reelection.

Judith M. "Judy" Foster.,age 78 of Slayton, Minn., formerly of Wall, died Monday evening, February 28, 2011, at Our House Hospice of Murray County in Slayton, Minn.

Judith Marie "Judy" Printz was born September 17, 1932, the daughter of Oscar and Thresa (Napier) Printz in Wasta, S.D. She attended country grade school near Elm Springs, and graduated from high school in New Underwood, S.D., in 1950.

Judy was united in marriage to Dennis Foster of Wal, on September 2, 1952. In the early years of marriage, she worked as a waitress and for the telephone company in Wall.
