The Philip Lady Scotties traveled to Box Elder, Thursday, October 15, to compete in the Douglas volleyball tournament.

Warming up with a win in their first match against the Douglas Patriots, the Scotties then blew by the Bennett County Lady Warriors. Philip's third match pitted them against the Saint Thomas More Cavaliers, where the repetitive scores went against Philip for a 1-2 loss. The Lady Scotties now hold a season record of 16-10.

The Philip Scotties football team hosted long-time rivals the Wall Eagles, Friday, October 14.

The first quarter belonged to the underdogs, the Scotties. Despite Wall's defensive efforts, Philip had quickly worked its way down to the five-yard line. The ball was then handed to Cody Reder, who rushed it in for the game's first touchdown. Philip' Chaney Burns kicked the ball through the uprights for the extra point. With 8:05 still on the clock, the score was Scotties - 7, Eagles - 0.

The Philip Lady Scotties hosted the Lyman Raiders, Thursday, October 12.

The match ended 2-3. The Scotties gained the lead by winning the first game 25-16. The match then took a reversal back to an even one to one, when the Raiders won the second game 22-25. Regaining their momentum, the Philip team won the third game 25-14, only to lose the fourth 16-25. The final game went into overtime scoring, but Lyman was the first team to get to a score of minimum of 15 with at least a two point difference ahead of their opponent's score.

In baseball you call it a clutch play, in basketball a buzzer beater, in football a winning drive. In any sport it takes a winning effort by every member of a team to win championships. Nowhere is that more evident than the Philip Scotties' cross country team.

All these boys have done in the last four weeks is win. Week six of the 2011 season brought a one-point win over Wall for the Western Great Plains Conference title. Week seven a team title at the Highmore Invite where the top four teams were separated by only four points.

Belle Ravellette, age 75 of Philip, S.D., died Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Luella Belle Vaughn was born January 10, 1936, in Gregory County, S.D., the daughter of Dallas and Dorothy (Bennett) Vaughn. Belle grew up and attended school in Tripp and Gregory counties.

Belle was united in marriage to Lester Ravellette on November 15, 1953, at Gregory. They made their home in Gregory until moving to Sturgis in 1959. They moved to Philip in January 1960.

The intersection north of Philip, the crossing of Highway 14 and Highway 73, has had a history of vehicle accidents.

In late April of 2010, the South Dakota Department of Transportation erected an extra stop sign nest to the northbound lane of Highway 73 at the intersection with Highway 14.

Members of the Philip Ambulance Service and the Philip Health Services, Inc. received hands-on training through a high-tech program called Simulation in Motion - South Dakota.

First, on Wednesday, October 12, the emergency medical technicians and paramedics of the ambulance crew got their chance to work with the realistic training manniquins and go through scenarios in the simulated back of an ambulance.

The Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education meeting, Monday, October 17, was relatively short, though full.

A representative of the board has been invited to attend future Philip Chamber of Commerce meetings on the third Monday of each month. This is for direct two-way communications so both groups can be better informed about actions and concerns of the other. Superintendent Keven Morehart has spoken at chamber meetings before.

The 2011-2012 Philip High School student-to-work Internship program has filled all of its work sites.

A 5:30 a.m. leave time meant for a short night's sleep but it proved worthwhile as the Scotties made a powerful statement at the Highmore Invitation Cross Country Meet Saturday, October 1.

Nelson Holman and Tristen Rush were returning from injury for the first time in nearly two weeks and William Coyle had fought fire for eight hours the day before, the only thing we knew for sure was we would be facing many of the very best B division runners of 2011.

The Scotties cross country team traveled west to compete on the Tomahawk Golf Course six miles south of Lead, September 27.

The day saw clear skies and 87 degree weather for the 2:30 p.m. start time for the girls' varsity. Junior Holly Iwan, sophomore Allison Pekron, eighth grader Ellie Coyle and seventh grader Peyton Kuchenbecker lined up for this A division race. Iwan lead her team and at times, the entire field during the first mile.

Coyle ran at the front of the main group, Kuchenbecker, mid-pack and Pekron close behind her young teammate.
