The Philip Area wrestling team braved winter storm conditions to travel to Salem, S.D., and compete in the McCook Central Wrestling Tournament, Thursday, December 30.

With 131 points, the Philip Area team placed fifth overall, out of 15 teams represented at the tournament.

Philip Health Services, Inc. has had a history of hosting medical students during their hands-on rotations at various clinics before they graduate from their respective universities.

The most recent person shadowing and learning from the experienced doctors and physician assistants at PHSI is Laura Whittington, a 2003 Philip High School graduate and daughter of Monte and Maureen Palecek.

"I think that it is always nice when we can help with any future medical practitioner," said Dr. David Holman.

During the Philip City Council meeting Monday, January 3, one of the first orders of business was to approve the payment of bills.

Gross salaries, including benefits, up to December 31 came to a total of $41,859.01. The bills pending as of January 3 come to a total of $61,840.72.

For the new year, the council adopted the First National Bank in Philip as the official depository for the city. The Pioneer Review is the official newspaper for the city. The employees will have the same paid holidays as in previous years.

"Christmas time is a good time for people wanting to give. The CCFP (Country Cupboard Food Pantry) will make the season's donation last for a while," said Carol Hoffman, president of the CCFP.

This volunteer-operated free food distribution organization is based out of Wall, but it covers a geographical area that includes eight zip codes. The people served are determined by their zip code, no other eligibility criteria is required.
