On their home turf, the New Underwood Tigers took a beating from the Philip Scotties, Thursday, January 20.

The Scotties gave up the first quarter by a basket, though come halftime they held a six-point advantage. Doubling their opponent's third quarter score, the Philip team commanded a safe lead. The fourth quarter was the highest scoring one of the game by both teams, but still went to the Scotties.

The Philip Scottie boys' basketball team hosted the Bennett County Warriors, Saturday, January 22.

The class "B" Scotties kept the first quarter balanced with their class "A" opponents. Then Philip played a roller coaster game, diving down to just a four point second quarter and rocketing back up to a 24-point final quarter.

With about two minutes remaining in play, the Scotties had closed their once substantial deficit to a 52-55 score. With less than half a minute before the buzzer, they put a tie of 55-55 on the scoreboard.

The Scottie boys' basketball team were the guests of the White River Tigers, Tuesday, January 18.

Philip could not keep up with their opponents' offense, which sailed ahead with a game total of 15, three-point buckets. Both teams showed an increasing effort through the first three quarters, though the Tigers overshadowed the Scotties.

The Tigers, though holding a comfortable lead, racked up 21 fouls and had one player foul out. Not until the final quarter did Philip make any head way, but nowhere near enough.

The Class B Lady Scotties hosted the Class A Bennett County Lady Warriors, Saturday, January 22.

Kenneth "Ken" Upton, age 59, Fairbury, Neb., passed away July 9, 2010, in Fairbury.

Graveside services were held July 14, 2010, with Pastor Steve Frazier officiating.

Eulogy was given by Steve Siemsen. Music was provided by Lisa Wolfe, soloist.

Madonna J. Lesselyoung, age 72, of Philip, died Monday evening, January 24, 2011, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Madonna Dustman was born December 15, 1938, at New Underwood, S.D., the daughter of Harley and Agnes (Dresch) Dustman. She grew up in Wasta, Artesian and rural Faith, graduating from Faith High School in 1956.

She enlisted in the United States Air Force on January 21, 1957 in Omaha, Neb. She served in the Air Force until her honorable discharge on January 20, 1960.

Madonna was united in marriage to Theodore T.

Susie McEntire will perform in Kadoka, Sunday, February 6, 2:00 p.m. at the Kadoka City Auditorium. The afternoon of entertainment will be free, however a free-will offering will be taken. The event is sponsored by O'Bryan Arena in Belvidere.

Keenie Word, who has family roots to this area, will open for McEntire.

With many awards and nominations from TNN, GMA, and CCMA, McIEntire has been named artist of the year several times in the field of positive country music.

Area high school seniors can now apply for the Golden West Telecommunications college scholarship.

This year, 44 $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students from high schools in the Golden West service area.

Another medical provider has joined the staff of Philip Health Services, Inc.

Dave Webb, a certified physicians assistant, currently serves at the Kadoka Clinic every Monday and Tuesday. Webb began providing coverage at the clinic in December, working with Philip physicians David Holman and Coen Klopper.

"Dave is a great asset to the provider team at Philip Health Services," said Kent Olson, administrator of PHSI.

Having started December 27, Ryon Berry is deep into classes, sales and visiting the farms and ranches of Cenex Harvest States Midwest Cooperative customers. Berry is Midwest's new sales agronomist.

"We've gone from spring 1999 working with 20,000 acres to 60,000 plus acres this year," said Jim Kanable, agronomy manager for Midwest. "Our chemical and fertilizer sales now need one person in the office and one in the field. Ryon has more interest and experience on the seed side. We're going to grow seed sales with him here."

That interest and experience began in high school.
