Richard "R.W." Sichterman

Richard "R.W." Sichterman, 95, Rapid City, passed away February 9, 2011, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.

R.W. was born January 29, 1916, in Philip, S.D., to Garrit and Jane (White) Sichterman. He grew up in the Philip area and attended school until his graduation in 1934. Joining the Civilian Conservation Corps that same year, he worked on Sheridan Lake and Major Lake. He moved to Rapid City, working at several jobs.

R.W. owned Gateway Second Hand Store, managed Warne Chemical and was service manager at Rapid Motors.


Rev. James W. "Jim" Vos

Rev. James William "Jim" Vos, age 89 of White River, S.D., died Saturday, February 12, 2011, at the White River Health Care Center in White River.

James William, the first son of James W. and Lois (Waltz) Vos, was born January 3, 1922. He grew up on a farm in the Dutch community of Pella, Iowa, with his two younger brothers, roaming the outdoors and attending school. The family left the farm in 1936 and moved to Oskaloosa, where Jim graduated from high school in 1939. He then worked and attended college in Oskaloosa, before volunteering for military service in 1942.


Delia Harty

Delia Harty, age 54 of Milesville, S.D., died Friday, February 11, 2011, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Delia Marie Williams was born August 2, 1956, in Pierre, S.D., the daughter of James "Jim" and Elaine (Pfeifer) Williams. She grew up in the Milesville community, attending Hart and Milesville rural schools. She then attended St. Martin's Academy in Rapid City, graduating in 1974. She then graduated from Mount Marty College with a bachelor of science degree in textiles and home economics in 1978. After graduation she taught one year at Dell Rapids Saint Mary's.


Eugene T. "Bud" Fortune

Eugene T. "Bud" Fortune, age 83 of Quinn, S.D., died Saturday, February 12, 2011, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Eugene "Bud" Fortune was born September 22, 1927, in the Grindstone area, one of eight children born to R.A. and Francis (McCloskey) Fortune. Bud attended grade school at Lincoln Country School and Philip and Quinn high schools.

Bud joined the United States Army on December 7, 1951, and served in Germany. He was honorably discharged on November 17, 1953, and from the U.S. Army Reserve on Jan. 10, 1960.


Sandra L. Bauer

Sandra Lenore Bauer, 48, Rapid City died Wednesday Feb. 16, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospice House.

Sandy is survived by her daughters, Michelle and Gina; her mother Ardith; her sister Shelley; her brother Bush; her dog Clifford and an amazing group of friends.

Sandy's passions were drag racing, walking; playing with Clifford; lighting up rooms with her smile and personality and giving all she could in the terms of love and happiness to everyone she met.

Ralph "Bud" Hedman

Ralph "Bud" Hedman, 89, of Pierre, passed away Friday, January 28, 2011, at Avera McKennan Healthcare Center in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1, at Lutheran Memorial Church with interment following at Riverside Cemetery.

Ellis Ralph "Bud" Hedman was born on April 24, 1921, to Cora Olivia (Anderson) and Ellis Elias Abraham Hedman at Hayes, S.D. He grew up on the farm at Hayes, attending grade school at Hayes and enjoying community activities with family, friends and neighbors.


Marvin Palmer

Marvin Palmer, age 80 of Murdo, S.D., died Tuesday, January 25, 2011, at St. Mary's Hospital in Pierre.

Marvin A. Palmer was born December 4, 1930, in Cresbard, S.D., the son of Horace and Irene (Arner) Palmer. As a young child, his family moved to Central City where Marvin grew up, graduating from Lead High School in 1949.

Marvin entered the United States Army on February 3, 1951, where he was a tank driver, during the Korean War. While in the military, Marvin was awarded the Purple Heart from wounds he received in combat. He was honorably discharged on January 20, 1954.


Phyllis W. Heitman

Phyllis W. Heitman was born on November 10, 1920, to William and Grace (Valiant) Meagher in Lucerne, S.D., where she was raised. She attended grade school in Lucerne and high school in Philip, S.D., where she graduated in 1939.

On November 18, 1941, Phyllis was united in marriage to Ludwig "Louie" Heitman at the St. Mary Catholic Church rectory in Philip. At this time, Louie was serving in the United States Army. Louie was stationed several places throughout his stateside service. As a war bride, Phyllis moved often to be near Louie.


Philip Area competes at Wagner's State B Duals wrestling tournament Jan. 29

The Philip Area Scottie wrestling team was one of 11 teams competing at the 2011 State B Duals put on at Wagner, Saturday, January 29.

Three rounds of regular competition were followed by three rounds of championship matches. First, the teams were divided into three pools, with teams in each pool vying for placement within that pool. Philip Area, in a pool with just Wagner and Elk Point/Jefferson, earned one win and one loss. Philip Area then went up against the second place teams in the other pools.

The duals ended with Tri Valley holding a 5-0 record for first place.


Scotties lose to Cowgirls 36-66

The Lady Scotties traveled to Lemmon to challenge the Cowgirls, Friday, January 28.

Philip 7 5 9 15 = 36

Lemmon 9 23 21 13 = 66

The Scotties kept pace with the Cowgirls during the first quarter, following by only one field goal. The second and third quarters saw a distancing by Lemmon. The final quarter went to the Scotties, but not enough to offset the lead.
