Earl S. Lunde. age 86, of Bloomington, Minn. passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2010.

Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Earl was born to Erik and Emma Lunde on a farm near Ellsworth, Wisc., on September 21, 1923.

He will be remembered for his kindness, twinkling eyes, quick wit and love of family.

He was a Naval Aviation Cadet at Chapel Hill, NC. He started working for Northwest Airlines in 1941. He worked as an aircraft mechanic, flight engineer, co-pilot and captain. He retired after 49 years with NWA in October of 1990.

Karrie Pecka (Karoline Kathlein Schreiber), a longtime resident of Los Gatos and Saratoga, Calif., passed away due to natural causes on July 25, 2010, at the Los Gatos Terraces Health Center.

Born August 16, 1918, in Quinn, S.D., she was a daughter of Henry (Heinrich) F. Schreiber and Anna M.

Badlands Cowboy for Christ Rodeo Camp in Kadoka August 2-5. The campers attending received two days of rodeo event instruction and then competed in two days of rodeo performances.

With 104 campers and more than 70 adult volunteers, the campers took part in a several fun games, including a paint ball competition, chapel services, and spending time with friends.

The Northern Bull Riding Tour again was a major draw during the Haakon/Jackson County Fair and Achievement Days.

Beginning at 7:00 Saturday evening, August 7, at the Philip Roping Arena, the full activities lasted until after 10:00 p.m.

All proceeds from this bull riding event go to the Make-A-Wish weekend at the Northern Bull Riding Tour finals at the Sioux Falls arena September 25. Paul Gropper was the main man behind the minute-to-minute operation of the evening's bull riding event.

Marion Nelson is a friendly member of the Philip community, and keeps herself busy with different projects around the house and town.

At the young age of 16 years, it wasn't easy for Jody Petras when she learned she had cancer. She was just a junior at Kadoka High School. Today, she is an 18-year cancer survivor.

Her contagious, bright smile and the soft voice will leave an impact when you listen to her testimonial on how important it is to take precautionary measures when dealing with one's health.

Petras will not only be attending Kadoka's Relay For Life on Saturday, August 21, she is scheduled to be a guest speaker.

She's been through it all.

Plans to proceed with a more indepth look at putting the county library in a downtown location were approved by the Haakon County Board of Commissioners at their August 3 meeting.

Barbara Sloat, Shirley Kangas and Jennifer Henrie, from the library board of directors, and librarian Annie Brunskill approached the commissioners with their intentions to look further at the former K-Gee's building on Philip's main street.

Sloat noted that usage of the library continues to increase and they want to pursue the possibility of moving the library to the downtown area.

Grasshoppers have taken over Haakon County this summer, and it looks as though they are not going to be thinning out any time soon.

The only sure way the grasshopper species will die for the year is with a hard freeze. While the warm weather remains, grasshoppers will continue to be a nuisance throughout western South Dakota. The first freeze and frost of the year will bring an end to the pesky crop eating grasshoppers, but not the entire species.

This summer, Haakon County is seeing an increasingly large number of grasshoppers.
