The Philip Scottie track and field team competed in the People's Market Relays at Kadoka Tuesday, April 27.

Attending schools were Philip, Kadoka Area, Wall, New Underwood, Faith, Lyman, Jones County, Dupree and Rapid City Christian.

For the boys, Karch Foley threw the discus 139 feet and two inches to claim first place. Casey Cvach ran the 100 meter dash in 11.5 seconds to earn first place. Jeff O'Connell took first in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52 seconds even. In the 3200 meter run, William Coyle came in first with a time of 11 minutes and 22 seconds.

Philip High School hosted the Philip Golf Meet at the Lake Waggoner Golf Course Friday, April 23.

Participating schools included Philip, Wall, Jones County, Hill City, Newell, Bennett County, Rapid City Christian, Rapid City Stevens junior varsity, Red Cloud and St. Francis.

The Philip boy's varsity team took second place with a total score for three players over 18 holes of 315.

According to Philip golf coach Doug Hauk, "The Philip tourney will be this Friday and the Conference on Saturday.

"I took four boys to the Howard Wood Dakota Relays in Sioux Falls this past weekend," said Philip High School's head track and field coach Jerry Rhodes. "They ran four relays and won all four.

The 20th annual Triple Crown High School Rodeo was held April 30, May 1 and 2. The first two days of rodeo action were held in Kadoka and the final rodeo performance was held in Burke.

The State FFA Degree, the highest degree of membership conferred by the South Dakota FFA, was presented to 224 agricultural education students at the 82nd annual South Dakota FFA convention held in Brookings, April 18 through April 20.

The 2010 State Degree recipients for the Philip FFA chapter are Carissa Doolittle, Caleb Clements and Danielle Piroutek.

The Philip chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) was represented by 14 students at the State FCCLA Convention in Sioux Falls April 25 through 28.

The Philip chapter, lead by advisor Brigitte Brucklacher, returned home with state championship award. The three girls who gave a chapter showcase Students Taking Action with Recognition presentation, Colby Smith, Emma Slovek and Abby Carley, earned first place.

Leonard Thorson, age 88 of Philip, SD, died Monday, April 26, 2010, at Ft. Meade Veterans Hospice, surrounded by his family.

Leonard was born February 27, 1922 at home near Grindstone, SD, to Joe and Cora (Hovey) Thorson. He was the eldest of six children.

He was united in marriage to Phillis Pierce on October 16, 1948 in Rapid City. They farmed and ranched in the Grindstone area until moving to Philip in 1992. Leonard had the mail route to Milesville for nearly 50 years. One year he received recognition for outstanding service on the agri-talk radio program.

Duane Eleeson, age 81 of Wichita, KS, formerly of Philip, SD, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, in Wichita, KS.

He was a wonderful, loving family man and a dedicated and caring friend. Duane Herman Eleeson was born in Philip, SD, on June 30, 1928, to Herman and Ida (Christenson) Eleeson. Their parents had immigrated from Norway and homesteaded in Haakon County.

He married Elaine Van Ourkerk, his high school sweetheart, and to this union were born to children, Linda J. Upton and Bruce D. Eleeson.

J. Ronald "Ronnie" Ireland, age 59 of Kadoka, SD, died suddenly on Saturday morning, April 24, 2010, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

James Ronald Ireland was born November 9, 1950, at the old Kadoka Hospital, the son of F.H. "Shorty" and Betty N. (Mansfield) Ireland. He grew up on a ranch southwest of Belvidere, attending grade school at the Buffalo School and grades 7-12 at Kadoka, graduating from Kadoka High School in 1969. 4-H was a big part of his growing up years. After graduation, he attended one year of college at Black Hills State.

Landon Matthew Moschell, age 7 months, 14 days, of Wall, SD, died Thursday, April 29, 2010, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Tuesday, May 4, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Wall, with Father Leo Hausmann as celebrant.

Music was provided by Rita Patterson, organist, Willie Hustead, vocalist, and Elizabeth Sykora, violinist. Reader was Terri Harris. Altar servers were Aaron Moschell, Christopher Hagen and Evan Hagen. Ushers were Michael Erz and Nick Feller.
