The 2010 Scottie cross country team of eight runners, five boys and three girls, is the smallest in the past decade, but they are a true team. One for all and all for one. No where was this more evident than the 2010 Region 5B Championship held at the Philip Golf Course Wednesday, October 13.

The Lady Scotties competed in the Douglas Volleyball Tournament Saturday, October 16.

Starting out the tournament with a season record of 15-8, Philip first went up against the Red Cloud Lady Crusaders. The Scotties won the match 2-0.

The Philip Lady Scotties traveled to Presho, Thursday, October 16, to challenge the Lyman Raiders.

The Scotties won the match 3-0, though through tight play. The first game ended 25-21. The second game was even closer, with a score of 25-23. The final game, which went into extended play, finally resulted in a 26-24 win for Philip. The Lady Scottie varsity team now holds a 15-8 season record.

The Philip Scotties traveled to Buffalo, Friday, October 15, to go up against the Harding County Ranchers.

Harding Co. 22 24 0 6 = 52

Philip and Harding County both earned 13 first downs. The Scotties executed 28 running plays, to the Ranchers' 27. Philip used three punts to Harding County's two. Philip lost only 20 yards because of penalties, compared to Harding County's 40 yards.

Then the statistics start leaning further and further away from Philip's traditional game.

On our first day of hiking in the Black Hills, we never expected to visit the Peterson Memorial Hospital's emergency room, but we did.

And, it turned into a positive experience. It started when we were met and evaluated by Rebecca. Her pleasant disposition and professional demeanor made us immediately comfortable. Then we met Dr. Holman, who was equally as pleasant and professional

After a complete examination, Dr. Holman requested both x-rays and blood tests. Two very nice young ladies went to work and were both very business-like and equally as nice.

Darryl Keith Terkildsen, age 18 of Wanblee, South Dakota, died October 16, 2010, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Darryl Keith Terkildsen, Dae Day, was born January 20, 1992 in Philip, SD, in a cold, blowing, winter storm that struck the area. Born was a robust, beautiful baby boy with glorious black hair, a mother's pride and a little brother to Kenneth and Audrey Terkildsen. Darryl left this world to be with his family that preceded him in death on October 16, 2010.

Edward Daum, age 85 of Murdo, South Dakota, died October 12, 2010, at the Hans P. Peterson Memorial Hospital in Philip.

Ed was born July 23, 1925, in rural Jones County to Nicholas and Elizabeth (Hoekman) Daum, the second of 11 children. He attended country school through eighth grade and lived within a half mile of his birthplace his entire life.

Ed married Evelyn Smith on July 2, 1952, in Platte. They made their home on the family farm west of Murdo. To this union was born four children, Elaine, Darrell, Gladys and Kenneth.

Over 50 people attended an informational Philip City Council meeting concerning potential plans to rehabilitate Wood and Walden Avenues.

The Tuesday, October 12, meeting included council members, landowners in that area, and representatives of the engineering firm Schmucker, Paul, Nohr and Associates, Mitchell, S.D. SPN&A project engineer Jeff McCormick first gave an illustrated overview of the entire project.

Run-off control, easing snow removal efforts, maximizing parking on the streets and improving esthetics were the stated reasons for the project.

The Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education met at 7:00 p.m. Monday, October 18.

The members had begun tours earlier at 4:00 p.m. of the district properties and buildings. After inspecting the Philip buildings and the Milesville rural school, they finished at the Cheyenne rural school and conducted the scheduled monthly public meeting there.

Concerning the district's property, President Bill Slovek reported, "Overall, we are in good shape with our capital budget. We need to keep doing a little (upkeep and improvement) every year.
