Jerry Willuweit, age 66 of Quinn, South Dakota, died January 14, 2010, at the Hospice House in Rapid City.

Survivors include a daughter Jami Moon and her husband JT of Quinn; one son Will Willuweit of Quinn; two granddaughters; one brother Jim Willuweit of Creighton; one sister Connie Keil of Black Hawk; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, January 17, with a vigil service and time of sharing at 7:00 p.m., all at the Wall High School.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m.

Kay Berkemeier, age 62 of Quinn, South Dakota, died January 2, 2010, at her home in Quinn.

Survivors include her sister Diana Sue "Suzi" Pesicka and her husband Richard of Colorado Springs, Colorado; two nephews Conor and Cade Pesicka of Colorado Springs; and an aunt Pat Hassettt of Cupertino, California.

Funeral services are pending.

The Philip Area Scotties wrestling team earned second place at the MidDakota Monster Wrestling Tournament in Presho, Friday and Saturday, January 8 and 9.

Hot Springs won the tourney with 255.5 points, Philip earned 219.5 points, and Lyman County took third with 166 points.

Philip had three champions, 103 pounder Lane Blasius, 145 pounder Blake Lobdell and 171 pounder Troy Guptill. There were two second placers, Clint Nelson at 189 pounds. and Karch Foley at 215. Bodhi Lytle, in the 160 pound division, placed third. Ross Julson, in the 152 pound division, earned fourth place.

The Philip Lady Scotties traveled to New Underwood on Thursday, January 7, to challenge the Tigers. The Scotties returned victorious with a 42-39 win.

The game began with a quick basket by the New Underwood Lady Tigers over the number 10 Philip Lady Scotties. Philip's Marissa Mann answered back on the Scotties' next trip down the court. The Scotties lead by four points at the end of the first quarter, though earned only two points in the second quarter.

The Philip Lady Scotties basketball team hosted the Dupree Tigers on Saturday, January 9. The 79-45 win went to Philip.

The Philip Scotties boys' basketball team traveled to White River on Saturday, January 9, to compete against the Lower Brule Sioux in the White River Classic Basketball Tournament.

"We were tired coming off the Jones County game, and it showed for a half," said Philip head coach Michael Baer. "We fought back to take a lead at half, then held it through the third quarter. We made a nice run to start the fourth by picking up our defense. Lower Brule got hot from the three point line and made it close at the end.

The Philip Scotties hosted the Jones County Coyotes on Friday, January 8.

Though Philip ended the first quarter behind by one basket, come half-time, the team had rallied for an 11 point advantage. The third quarter saw the Coyotes cut the Scottie lead to just one point. The fourth quarter ended in a 51-51 tie.

A semi-truck with a vehicle carrier trailer was headed west on Highway 14 early Monday morning, January 11.

The driver noticed fire from the trailer. Stopping approximately 12 miles east of Philip, he called 911 and tried to unload the five new vehicles off the trailer.

The Midland and Philip Volunteer Fire Departments received the call at approximately 6:45 a.m. and responded. Midland sent two units and Philip sent a total of four units, one parked just over the hill on the highway for Philip Fire Chief Marty Hansen to control traffic.
