Lois Marie Stoner was born to Leo and Mary Anne Stoner on August 8, 1953 at St.

Arlys Neville, age 76 of Philip, South Dakota, formerly of Milesville, died September 22, 2009, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.



Arlys Lee Hansen was born May 22, 1933, the daughter of Wallace "Bud" and Helga (Ellefson) Hansen. She was raised by Bud and Marie Hansen on the Hansen ranch.

Arlys was united in marriage to Robert S. Neville on October 15, 1950, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Philip, and to this union five children were born. Arlys and Bob worked for various ranchers around the Philip area.

The Lady Scotties first faced the Lyman Raiders at the Lyman Triangular Volleyball Meet on Thursday, September 10. Sweeping the match 3-0, Philip went on to also sweep the Stanley County Lady Buffs 3-0.

Good, hard work posed no problem for the Scottie cross country team as the White River Prestige Run on Monday, September 14, became their third race in a five day period.

Though all three race days were filled with accomplishments, this day might be the best the Scotties have had in over a decade. Not only did the boys' varsity team win the Prestige Run for the second year running, but the girls' varsity added to the day's excitement by winning a hotly contested team title as well.

LeeAnn Knutson, Marlene Urban and Curt Arthur worked in a school in Swaziland, southern Africa, as part of a mission trip from August 16 through 26.

Urban said, "Traveling to Swaziland to meet my sponsored child, play with all the children and work at the projects was a tremendous privilege. The need is so great." Children are sponsored by individuals, families and groups through the Mission of Mercy organization.

"We worked in a school, a care point, where kids as young as five carried younger siblings on their backs most of the day," said Knutson.

As of September 4, Jon Beck is the new Game, Fish and Parks conservation officer for Haakon County and the northern part of Jackson County.

Since June 30, the position has been empty. Kit Bramblee had resigned to take a post with the federal fish and wildlife division. Beck and Bramblee were at the academy together and know each other fairly well.

"I grew up in this profession," said Beck, whose father, Tom, has been the conservation officer for Bennett County, southern Jackson and eastern Shannon counties for 28 years.

What used to be Murrays Coffee, Confections and More has moved its business location to southeast corner of the intersection of Highways 73 and 14.

The business hours for the new Murrays Corner will be 5:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sundays. Willard "Edwin" and Beth Murray will now be offering full breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. Their manager for the new business will be Becky Eagle.

The start of the special budget meeting of the Philip City council at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15, took less than a minute to approve minor business before addressing the swimming pool emergency situation.

Approved building permits applications included Golden West Telecom for a concrete retaining wall, Emily Kroetch for excavating and repairing a sewer line, and Casey Seager to excavate and repair a water line.

Mayor John Hart then immediately addressed the audience, which overflowed into the hallway outside the courthouse's Community Room.

The 2009 Scottie Homecoming Parade is "Song Titles." The public is encouraged to enter floats in the parade and attend the pep band concert and rally on Friday before the parade.
