Haakon Board of Education begins year

Swearing in ... New Board of Education member R. Mark Radway, left, and re-elected board member Kelly Blair declare their oaths of office as business manager Britni Ross reads them.

The Monday, July 20, meeting for the Haakon School District 27-1 Board of Education began with the swearing in of newly-elected board members R. Mark Radway and Kelly Blair.

Bill Slovek was voted in again as the board president and Anita Peterson as the vice president. Slovek then initiated the "housekeeping that must be done at the beginning of each new year." First National Bank in Philip is the official depository for school district funds.

July 9th

Howard Eggers

Howard W. Eggers, age 94, of Brookings, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at the Brookings Hospital. 

  Howard Wallace Eggers was born July 31, 1914, at Hopkins, MO, to Andrew Jackson and Pearl Maude (Tillman) Eggers. At age 10 he moved with his parents to a farm south of Ogallala, NE, where he was raised with four brothers and two sisters. He attended country school through the eighth grade. On February 8, 1948, he married Pauline E. Turley at San Diego, CA.

Gladys Rose

Gladys C. Rose, 85, of Pierre, passed away, Monday, June 29, 2009, at St. Mary's Healthcare TCU in Pierre.

Gladys Irene Castille was born November 10, 1923, in Sunset, LA, to Armand Joseph II and Annie Celeste "Sally" (Boutte) Castille. As the eldest of eight children, she was lovingly known as "Teat" by her siblings. Growing up in Louisiana, Gladys developed a love of horseback riding, playing tennis on the family tennis court and sports in general. Her love of sports continued throughout her life.

South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals

The South Dakota High School Rodeo Association's 2009 Finals Rodeo was held June 24-28 at the Black Hills Roundup Grounds in Belle Fourche.

This year's SDHSRA queen: is Kourtney Hauge, White Lake. All around cowboy is Jace Melvin, Ft. Pierre and the reserve all around cowboy is Cole Fulton, Miller. Taygen Schuelke, Newell, is this year's rookie cowboy. All around cowgirl is Joey Painter, Buffalo, and the reserve all around cowgirl is Calley Worth, Gettysburg. Kristi Steffes, Vale, is the rookie cowgirl.

Swimming pool heats up city meeting

The Philip City Council meeting on Monday, July 6, quickly finished up old business and then addressed guests concerning new business.

The replacement of 1,000 gallon water meters has been completed. The council has an updated version of a map concerning a comprehensive plan for future land use and building codes.

Second break-in at Midland business

During the early morning hours of Thursday, July 2, the Midland business of Just Tammy's Bar and Grill was burglarized.

The establishment had also been broken into and looted on April 9. It once had video lottery machines for use by its customers, but they had been removed before the first burglary.

Entrance for the latest break-in was made through the back door sometime after the business was closed around 12:30 a.m. The metal door had been secured from the inside with a vertical cross beam braced from one side of the door frame to the other.
