For its homecoming football game on Friday, October 2, Philip hosted the White River Tigers. The Scotties won 54-6.

Neither team scored in the first quarter, though with only 32 seconds remaining, Philip punted to the 28 yard line, forced a fumble and recovered the ball. Within seconds of start of the second quarter, Philip's Jeff O'Connell ran in a Brandon O'Dea pass for the touchdown. Karch Foley rushed in the extra point conversion and the score was 8-0.

Not able to complete their drive, the Tigers punted to the Philip eight yard line.

Traveling to Lemmon on Thursday, October 1, the Lady Scotties earned a shut-out win over the Cowgirls 3-0. The set scores were 25-21, 25-22, 25-17. Philip varsity now has a season record of 14-5.

The Philip Lady Scotties hosted the Dupree Tigers volleyball team on Saturday, October 3. The Philip varsity won 3-0, with set scores of 25-12, 25-6 and 25-21. Their season record currently stands at 15-5.

Vivian Hamar, age 82 of Long Valley, South Dakota, died October 5, 2009, at her home in Long Valley.

Vivian Delores Huisman was born April 30, 1927, in South Sioux City, Nebraska, the daughter of Thomas Andrew and Margaret (Daniels) Huisman. She grew up in South Sioux City and graduated from high school in 1945. She was a member of the National Honor Society in high school.

Shirley Anderson, age 94 of Kadoka, South Dakota , died October 6, 2009, at the Rapid City Regional Hospital.

Shirley J. Buum was born March 1, 1915, at White River, South Dakota, the daughter of Christian and Sophia (Wegner) Buum. She grew up and received her education in White River. Shirley married Clifford Larson in 1943, and to this union three children were born. They made their home in Wood, South Dakota.

Shirley married Alfred G. Anderson in 1965. They resided in Wood, Rapid City and Kadoka. They enjoyed restoring antique furniture until their retirement.

After 26 years of traveling the United States, by horse-drawn wagon, Ron McGilvery, is thinking of settling down.

Raised in Gettysburg, SD, he is friends with Sonny LaBeau, and comes through Philip every so often to renew the friendship. "He came through in '95, then 2004, I believe, and now," said LaBeau. "In Gettysburg, he had a '53 Mercury with straight pipes, which got him into a little trouble back then.

Erica Williams has recently returned from Omaha where she had gall bladder surgery.

Combined with her cystic fibrosis, the shut-down gall bladder has been greatly affecting Williams. "She was very bad for the last few days before the Rapid City specialists said that the experts in Omaha may be a better choice to do surgery for her," said her father, Roger Williams. "That is where her cystic fibrosis has been treated for years. They know her history. Just before we took her down there, she broke down and said that she could not, or even wanted to, keep going.

The Philip City Council experienced a rare vote, twice, during its meeting on Monday, October 5. Tied voting had to be broken with the mayor casting the deciding vote.

The suddenly necessary swimming pool replacement project has stopped work on the pool deck replacement. Though the council unanimously approved paying $8,146 to Lester-Robbins Construction for work already done, it was divided on continuing any obligations. Councilman Michael Vetter said, "I am willing to sign a contract for them to do the deck work in the spring, with a pre-payment of $10,000.

The Philip cross country team added the Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens AA-A-B Invitational to their schedule this year because the Elks Golf Course is the sight of the 2009 State Champonship.

The competition was extremely tough on Saturday, September 26, as schools from South Dakota, North Dakota and Wyoming gathered to enter 452 runners, 33 teams, in the high school divisions. There were also 10 middle school teams.

Philip's Holly Iwan and Emily Schofield ran in the girls' varsity run, along with 128 others.

The hosting Philip Scotties were glad to be on their home course of the Lake Waggoner Golf Course for the Western Great Plains Conference cross country meet on Wednesday, September 23.

The weather - sunny skies, low 60s and a light breeze - brought out personal best performances, and a team title that had not gone to Philip since 1995, which was then the Three Rivers Conference.

The boys' varsity five kilometer race began with Philip's Zane Pekron and William Coyle leading the field.
