On Thursday, August 28, Philip will be South Dakota's Capital For A Day. Activities include tours and meetings around town, and an Expo, where citizens can talk with Gov. Mike Rounds and state officials one-on-one.

Citizens can also take advantage of many state services at the Expo. The day concludes with a community dinner featuring a keynote address and a question and answer session with the governor. The community is encouraged to participate in all the day's activities.

At a Jackson County Republican Party meeting held on August 11, District 27 Representative Mark DeVries announced his withdrawal from the ballot in the upcoming election in November.

DeVries will serve the remainder of his term, which will expire on December 31, 2008.

"I would like to thank my constitutes in District 27 for the opportunity to serve them the last two years in Pierre," DeVries said.

Vern and Carrol Foland were honored during a special meeting on Friday, August 15, by the Philip Chapter #100 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Vern was presented a 60-year pin and Carrol was presented a 65-year pin by Jan Hewitt, Worthy Matron. Their daughter, Dr. Kaye Foland from Rapid City, pinned the emblems on her parents.

Vern joined the Midland organization March 25, 1946. Midland has since joined with the Philip chapter. Carrol joined in Philip on March 20, 1941.

The Philip chapter was organized in 1910 and has met continuously since.

Letter to the Editor;

In my almost 53 years of life, this will be my fourth "letter to the editor." I'd like to put a title on this one. I'll call it LISTEN UP LOOKY-LOOS!

"This is an opportunity for people, who would not normally go to Pierre, to discuss issues," said Philip Finance Officer Monna Van Lint. "How often can you simply walk in, especially in your own home town, to talk one-on-one with the governor of South Dakota?"

Kent Olson, co-chairman with Corky Thorson of the Philip Chamber of Commerce, said, "The governor isn't going to come here for Capital For A Day for more than maybe once in our lifetime, so we should make the best use of it."

That opportunity will exist on Thursday, August 28.

State Rep. Jim Bradford has changed political parties and is challenging incumbent State Senator Theresa Two Bulls in the November general election for a South Dakota Senate seat in District 27.

Bradford announced this on Monday, August 11, at a Jackson County Republican Party meeting. "I have always believed in limited government, personal responsibility, fiscal responsibility and lower taxes. It is the Republican Party that best embodies those philosophies. My political philosophy has always been more conservative.

Jackie Longbrake, business manager for the Haakon School District 27-1, tendered her resignation, effective September 19, during the August 18 Board of Education monthly meeting.

The board accepted the resignation with regret, with President Bill Slovek voicing, "We wish you good luck in the future."

An interview committee was appointed. It consists of Longbrake, Superintendent Keven Morehart, High School Principal Jeff Rieckman, Slovek and Anita Peterson.

Shane VanderMay was driving north on Highway 73 from Philip on Tuesday, August 12. His CHS Midwest Cooperative truck, a 1991 Freightliner tri-axle, was carrying a partial load of 10 tons of unmedicated calf creep, to be delivered to a ranch up north.

At the same time, 3:40 p.m., a house was being moved southward across the bridge just west of Lake Waggoner. Dakota Hills House-moving, Inc. was transporting a prefabricated house from Rapid City to Wall.
