Philip Chamber of Commerce members enthusiastic about possible farmers' market

The main presentation during the Monday, June 9, meeting of the Philip Chamber of Commerce was a promotion for a possible future farmers' market.

Christine Andrus has already gotten the Philip City Council to waive any peddlers' licenses concerning the event that is proposed for Saturdays from July 1 through August 31 at the Fire Hall Park. The council's only concern was reminding vendors that sales tax is still required. An informational meeting is set for 2:00 p.m.

Built from the heart ...

Jaycie West, daughter of Zach and Amber West, sits upon a dresser that will be raffled during Philip Festival Days, August 1 and 2, as a fundraiser to help with medical expenses. Earlier this year Jaycie was kicked in the head by a horse and required surgery. "Now she's well on her way to 110 percent recovery," said grandfather Doug West. "The doctors gave her a green light to be a normal kid." The dresser is made of cedar, oak, cherry, teak, African Rosewood and barn wood, and has spur poles for handles.

Up to 15 inches of rain in some areas during the past month, caused flooding across the county last Friday, June 6, 2008, which in turn was bad enough that the Haakon County Board of Commissioners declared the county a disaster area at a special meeting Monday, June 9. Not present at the meeting were commissioners Don Eymer and Mel Smith.

"The roads are in tough shape," reported Kenny Neville, Haakon County highway superintendent.

Matched Bronc Ride ready for second year

The autograph session will begin at 5:30 p.m. under the arena tent on the west side of the Philip Roping Arena. The session will run until 7:00 p.m., when the riding will begin.

There will be three progressive rounds where only the top scoring riders from one round go on to the next. From the first round of all 25 invited cowboys will come the top 12 for the second round of bucking bronc competition. Only six bronc riders will advance to the last round.

An amount of $5,000 has been added to make a total prize money of $8,500 for the riders, $4,000 more than last year.
